Publication: December 30th 2016

Genre: Dark Fantasy Romance

Rating: 5/5

A girl of fire should never fall for a man of ice.
When Lyvie accepts a silly bet to kiss a random Reviver in the Tower of Whims, she doesn’t know the first thing about men. Then she chances upon one who becomes her obsession.

Only she couldn’t have chosen worse.

In hot pursuit of a man as handsome as he is cold, she abandons her best friend and ignores mounting perils in her new chapel, ultimately sacrificing her pride to secure his attention. Blinded by infatuation, she overlooks a Reviver who undertakes to mend her life before it unravels completely… whose unstinting aid goes far beyond friendship.

Navigating the twisted path of desire, Lyvie soon discovers that in the glamorous Tower of Whims, people obey only one law - that of attraction. And one rule.

That there are no rules.

"Scalding Ice and Goldfire" is a standalone dark fantasy romance set in the world of Malvaar, and is best enjoyed after "Incanta" and "Reviver Amond".

When I started writing this review I didn't expect it would end up this long. This book was just so good! ♥

The Lost Souls series by Avie Adams has turned into my new favorite series that I've read this year. It's the biggest surprise for me of the year as well. These books are true gems. And this one, Scalding Ice and Goldfire ended up being my favorite of them all. I absolutely loved it and could not put the book down.

This book takes place around the same time as Incanta Soul-Catcher but revolves mainly about Lyvie, a new Incanta who got a place with a Reviver in a chapel where she doesn't have it easy at all being a second Incanta to the first Incanta loaths her and really has it out for Lyvie. In the meanwhile she gets hopelessly infatuated with the coldhearted Zeitlin (who we also know from Incanta)

As flawed as she was, I really liked Lyvie. She really goes through hell during this book, but we can also see a big change in her towards the end. It was such great character developement! Her obsession with Zeitlin was quite intense, slightly extreme and sometimes I wondered why she did this to herself but it all did serve a purpose in the end, which I was glad about.

I'm also glad this book delved more into the character of Zeitlin because it made me look at him in a whole different way than I did in Incanta. He has suffered so many awful things in his life so I understand him more now and his decisions. It totally changed my whole perspective of him.

There were so many new secondary characters that I just loved. Mari and Ree were my two favorites. As well as Kair, who I thought was pretty brilliant. Mari was such a good friend to Lyvie and I just really adored Ree and kept wishing he would end up with Lyvie (of course I won't say if they do end up together. No spoilers!)

And just like I said before in my reviews of the other books, the writing is absolutely gorgeous. My opinion on that will probably never change. It's a delight to read this book word for word, page after page, chapter after chapter.

Overall, Scalding Ice and Goldfire by Avie Adams was yet another great addition to the Lost Souls series. The world the author has created is so very unique and addictive. I really can't get enough these dark fantasy books. I loved it!

Incanta Soul-Catcher - 4.5 stars
Reviver Amond - 4.5 stars

About Avie:
At school, Avie busied herself with drawing comics about escaping school. It wasn't an option, of course.
So she'd escape into reading. Her first reads were pure fantasy: fairy tales, preferably ambiguous, as well as myths from around the world and pretty much anything with a dark fantasy element in it.
She never thought she would write, but creating living and breathing dark worlds was too much of a temptation.

Review: Incanta - Soul-Catcher by Avie Adams

Title: Incanta - Soul-Catcher
Author: Avie Adams
Series: Lost Souls #1
Publication: November 13th 2014

Genre: Dark Fantasy
Purchase (FREE): Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

Rating: 4.5/5

Darkness rules her life. A pitiless man wants her body. A Daemon craves her heart.
Cytriah is a talented soul-catcher – her songs can enslave souls in dead bodies.
It’s not a gift, or a curse.
It’s what’s expected of girls born on Daemon-controlled Malvaar Island, where failure is punishable with the worst any woman can fear.
Whilst Cytriah strives to join the elite of soul-catchers, a chilling secret from her past rips her life apart. Trapped between dangerous men, she’s left with one choice: to pact with a Daemon.
It is forbidden.
And it may bring her something far worse than death…

If you're looking for complex, character-driven dark fantasy with a strong heroine, twists, thorny romance, and black magic, download "Incanta" today.

When I started Incanta - Soul-Catcher I wasn't really sure what I was getting into. And I wasn't actually sure what was going on at first, either. It took me a few chapters to really grasp it all, which is why I gave it 4.5 stars instead of the full 5. But the more I read about the complex and intricate world of Daemon-controlled Malvaar Island, the more engaged and fascinated I became with it. This story was so unqiue, so special. It's a top favorite of mine now.

What struck me instantly, though, was the beautiful and lyrical writing. I practically devoured the pages because of this. Also, the world-building was very much on point for me. I loved it all!

As for the characters... I really like the main character, Cytriah. I really felt bad for everything that was happening to her and what had happened to her in the past. She wasn't perfect. She makes some bad decisions, though she means well, and is flawed but that's kind of why I liked her so much.

I was also surprised by the character of Almond. At first I didn't expect him to be a major character in the story, for some odd reason. But I absolutely loved his relationship with Cytriah and how it slowly morphed into something more.

Overall, Incanta - Soul-Catcher by Avia Adams has got to be one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. It took me a little while to really get into the story but once I did I barely could put the book down. It was such a captivating story and deliciously dark. I would very highly recommend it.

Review: Prisoner by Annika Martin and Skye Warren

Title: Prisoner
Author: Annika Martin and Skye Warren
Series: Criminals & Captives #1
Publication: October 22nd 2014
Genre: Adult ~ Dark Romance

Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Kobo
Rating: 4/5

He seethes with raw power the first time I see him—pure menace and rippling muscles in shackles. He’s dangerous. He’s wild. He’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

So I hide behind my prim glasses and my book like I always do, because I have secrets too. Then he shows up in the prison writing class I have to teach, and he blows me away with his honesty. He tells me secrets in his stories, and it’s getting harder to hide mine. I shiver when he gets too close, with only the cuffs and the bars and the guards holding him back. At night I can’t stop thinking about him in his cell.

But that’s the thing about an animal in a cage—you never know when he’ll bite. He might use you to escape. He might even pull you into a forest and hold a hand over your mouth so you can’t call for the cops. He might make you come so hard, you can’t think.

And you might crave him more than your next breath.

I read this book because I had just finished three stories in a row by Annika Martin, which were awesome. And I was pretty curious how this story would turn out since it's also written by Skye Warren, who was a unknown author to me. Also, I'm a fan of dark erotica type stories and I did really enjoy prisoner.

The start was a bit slow for me but once Abby gets taken hostage by Grayson things started getting really exciting. At first I didn't like Abby much, to be honest. I guess she was a little bit too timid, though she and Grayson had chemistry from the start. But she does change a lot throughout the story. To me it seems like she was hiding who she really was for so long and when Grayson came along she can finally be herself.

Which brings us to Grayson. It's safe to say that I effin' love him. He walks the fine line of being redeemable and not being redeemable but I had wanted him to be a little more darker inside, if that makes sense. I really like it when characters have darkness inside of them, it makes them so much more interesting. But that didn't change the fact that his point of view was my favorite. Sorry, Abby, but I can't help myself. Grayson is bad. So bad. And he knows it!

Both characters have secrets. Secrets and memories they can't forget. Grayson wants revenge and Abby wants to give in to her desires, even though she knows she should try to get away from Grayson, which she does try a few times. And it always ends badly. I also should mention that I liked Grayson's "brothers". They're not all very nice but I'm just so intrigued by them.

The writing was fast-paced and read pretty easily. So that's all possitive for me. I just hate it when a book has bad writing, luckily not the case with this one. Oh and the sex scenes were scorching hot. I loved it!

Hot, action-packed, intense and intriguing, Prisoner by Annika Martin and Skye Warren was a great read. I really liked it and it's probably one of my favorites in this genre. There will be a sequel right?!
Highly recommended to anyone who loves these kind of books!

Review: Captive in the Dark by C.J. Roberts

Title: Captive in the Dark
Author: C.J. Roberts

Series: The Dark Duet #1
Publication: August 29th 2011
Genre: Adult ~ Dark Romance/Erotica
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository
Rating: 3/5

Caleb is a man with a singular interest in revenge. Kidnapped as a young boy and sold into slavery by a power-hungry mobster, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. For twelve years he has immersed himself in the world of pleasure slaves searching for the one man he holds ultimately responsible. Finally, the architect of his suffering has emerged with a new identity, but not a new nature. If Caleb is to get close enough to strike, he must become the very thing he abhors and kidnap a beautiful girl to train her to be all that he once was.

Eighteen-year-old Olivia Ruiz has just woken up in a strange place. Blindfolded and bound, there is only a calm male voice to welcome her. His name is Caleb, though he demands to be called Master. Olivia is young, beautiful, naïve and willful to a fault. She has a dark sensuality that cannot be hidden or denied, though she tries to accomplish both. Although she is frightened by the strong, sadistic, and arrogant man who holds her prisoner, what keeps Olivia awake in the dark is her unwelcome attraction to him.

WARNING: This book contains very disturbing situations, dubious consent, strong language, and graphic violence.

He was my tormentor and my solace; the creator of the dark and the light within.

Captive in the Dark started out as one of the best dark erotica books I had ever read. However... after the first 50% it was slowing down noticeably and I started liking it far less. I did still enjoy it but was a little frustrated by some of the actions of the characters and the way the story went.

What I liked the most about this book was the writing. Well, that and Caleb. ;) It was extremely well-written, something you don't see too much with this genre. I couldn't get enough of it.

And Caleb? What can I say about him that hasn't been said before by others? He was immensely captivating, seductive and had a very dark side about him. He has a very tragic backstory. The things that were revealed about him were simply heartbreaking. But I felt like all those things made him that more interesting and believable. I loved him. At least in the first half of the book.

Olivia on the other hand wasn't a favorite character of mine at all. Sure, I felt sorry for the girl and the things she went through but I couldn't like her. I wanted to, trust me, but she was a bit irritating to read about. I did like the scenes between her and Caleb most of the time but their relationship started bugging me because eventually Caleb fell too fast for her and started being too enarmored with her. I wanted the story and their relationship to be a bit darker and not all lovey dovey like it was in the end.

Captive in the Dark was partly enjoyable and partly kind of frustrating. I'm not sure what it says about me but I had expected to to be a lot darker and it may have started out like that but it sure went downhill after the first half of the book. Still, it's a good book, in my opinion and I do want to read the second book, but I'm just not sure where it will go next with how it ended, which is causing me to be a bit uncertain about buying it...

So I loved the writing, it was perfection and Caleb was an amazing character but the rest of the book left me a bit unsure. It's a quick story, though. I read it in less than 24 hours I think because I almost wasn't able to put it down. Definitely recommended!

Review: Seven Sons by Lili St. Germain

Title: Seven Sons
Author: Lili St. Germain

Series: Gypsy Brothers #1
Publication: January 3rd 2014 by Lili Saint Germain Publishing

Genre: Adult ~ Erotica
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
Rating: 3/5

My father was most certainly NOT an innocent man. As the leader of the Gypsy Brothers MC, he was guilty of many things. But he died for a crime that he didn’t commit, framed by an enemy within who then stole his club and everything he had ever worked to protect.

Including my innocence.

When Dornan Ross framed my father, he set into motion a series of events that could never be undone. My father was murdered by Dornan Ross and his sons when I was fifteen years old.

Before my father died, Dornan Ross and his seven sons stole my innocence, branded my skin and in doing so, ensured that their lives would be prematurely cut short. That they would suffer.

I’ve just turned twenty-one, and I’m out for blood. I'm out for revenge.

But I didn't expect to fall for Jase, the youngest brother in the club.

I didn't expect that he would turn my world upside down, yank my heart out of my chest and ride away into the sunset with it.

Now, I'm faced with an impossible choice - Jase, or avenging my fathers death?

Tomorrow is truly my birthday, for I will become another person. Today my name is Juliette Portland, but tomorrow I will wake up as someone else entirely.

Someone who will bring Dornan Ross and the Gypsy Brothers Motorcycle Club to their knees.

I really liked this book although there were a few things in it that bothered me a bit but since I got this book for free, I don't think I can complain too much about it. It was not bad and as totally crazy as it was, I did love the story.

What I liked the most about this book was the revenge part. I just love a girl getting her revenge. In this case Juliette "Julz" Portland went through hell when she was only fifteen. Her father got framed and murdered while she herself got raped and and beaten bloody by Dornan Ross and his sons. Years later Juliette, who now is twenty-one and goes by Samantha "Sammi" is out for revenge, planning to killing them all. And wow, she sure goes all the way to get her revenge.

The thing I had the most issues with was how far Julz was willing to go to get her revenge. Plastic surgery and being the whore of Dornan Ross are just two examples of that. Also it wasn't very believable how a girl who got abused the way she did, would find her rapers and infiltrate them like that. But on the other hand, it's the craziness that makes it such a page-turner.

I should also mention Jase, Dornan's youngest son. I'm not sure what to think about him yet. He has a connection with Julz but do I like him or not? Hmm, I don't know. There are parts where he's pretty nice but other parts where I'm thinking 'meh'. I'd love to read the second book to find out more about him and where the story goes next and most importantly who Julz kills next in her plan of revenge. I think it's going to get even more crazy and intense. Bring it on!

Megan Whitaker desperately wants to forget what the Malone brothers have done to her over the past two years – the haunting images and sensations still plaguing her thoughts and dreams – but she can’t. Charles may be dead, but Zander isn’t. I’ll bring you back to me. She wants to believe she’s safe with Nick in their secluded new home, but it doesn’t keep her from looking over her shoulder, jumping over unexpected sounds, carrying a concealed weapon or even preparing for the worst. Because she fears the time is near.

Nick Ellis has seen a change in his long, lost love. New Adult Romantic Suspense / Dark Realistic Fiction Recommended for 17+ for mature and disturbing situations, language and sexual content.

I'm sure I'm not the only one when I say that Nearly Mended blew me away. It took me a while to actuallty get to it, but I really wish I had read  the book sooner. I absolutely loved it!

I thought the first book, Nearly Broken, was likable but not as amazing as I wanted it to be. Nearly Mended was a thousand times better, in my opinion. It did surprise me because I hadn't expected it to be as dark, twisted and crazy as it was. And yes, these are very good things with a book like this. It just was so much more different than the first book and liked it so much more that I wish I could've given it more than five stars!

I don't know where Megan gets her strenght but I was very surprised by how strong she was in this book. She might've had a hard time in the beginning of the book, readjusting and everyting but once she gets taken again by Zander she's doing everything she can not to break down. There's a different factor this time around, though. I won't reveal what it is, for the sake of spoilers but damn, such a good twist!

I'm not sure what to say about Nick in this book. He definitely had his good moments but I'm just not a big fan of his. But I have to say that at least he never gives up on Megan, no matter what crap Zander makes both of them go true. That's something at least!

Also, I heard (before reading Nearly Mended) that people want Megan to end up with Zander. Of course, I was wondering what that all was about because Zander was a pretty fucked up psycho in the first book but now? Now I'm totally seeing it and damn it, Devon Ashley actually made me care about Zander. I still think he's a bastard and I want to hate him so much but yeah, there's something about him, I won't deny it.

Overall, Nearly Mended definitely had everything I'm looking for in a book like this. It had so much suspense, I almost couldn't take it anymore. The sex scenes were scorching and panty-dropping hot. And the last couple of chapters literally made my jaw drop. I can't wait for the next book. I want to read it as soon as it comes out!

Blog Tour: Debt Inheritance by Pepper Winters

Title: Debt Inheritance
Author: Pepper Winters
Series: Indebted #1
Publication: August 18th 2014
Genre: Adult ~ Dark Erotica
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | iTunes | Smashwords
Cover Rating: 5/5
Overall Rating: 5/5

“I own you. I have the piece of paper to prove it. It’s undeniable and unbreakable. You belong to me until you’ve paid off your debts.”

Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Being the first born daughter, her life is forfeit to the first born son of the Hawks to pay for sins of ancestors past. The dark ages might have come and gone, but debts never leave. She has no choice in the matter.

She is no longer free.

Jethro Hawk receives Nila as an inheritance present on his twenty-ninth birthday. Her life is his until she’s paid off a debt that’s centuries old. He can do what he likes with her—nothing is out of bounds—she has to obey.

There are no rules. Only payments.

If I had any doubts up till now (which I certainly didn't have), it's so very clear after reading Debt Inheritance that Pepper Winters is the queen of dark, gritty and sensual books — She's the best and so good at what she does.

Although brought up sheltered by a protective father and twin brother, Nila Weaver made a pretty good name for herself as a fashion designer and had just finished up a successful show. I really liked reading about her. She was funny, unconvential and protected — until she met Jethro Hawk. It's obvious she was very intrigued and captivated by him. Who wouldn't be? At least until she found out what Jethro's really about. He was cold, frightening, powerful and loyal to his corrupt family. If you're hoping for redeeming qualities, there are none (so far). Of course I loved him.

The secondary characters were also very interesting to read about. I'd like to know more about them. From Jethro's brothers to Nila's family to the mysterious Kite007 who sends Nila dirty texts. Seriously, who is he? He must be important to the story, I'm sure of it. Pepper Winters has always been good in creating fascinating side characters that I want to get to know more. It's what I'm used to with her books. I love it.

This six hundred year debt where the Hawks essentially own the Weaver women, was a pretty intriguing concept to me. Evil but intriguing. I'm sure there's so much more to find out about this debt and I can't wait to find out along with Nila. Just like Pepper Winters's other books, this one was full of dark, dirty and erotic elements. This is definitely not a story for the faint hearted. Be warned. I, personally loved it of course. I pretty much devour books like these and Debt Inheritance was no exception.

I honestly hadn't expected this book to end so soon. I mean, It's pretty clear that this is a slightly shorter book so I read it pretty fast. But still,  I wasn't ready for the ending, especially not that ending. Wow!

I still have so much questions. There's a lot left unanswered, which I'm sure will be explained in the next books. I especially want to know more about the debt and what the Weavers did exactly to earn a punishment like that. Obviously I want to know more about Jethro, too. About his past, his childhood, his likes and dislikes... heck, I want to know everything. Also, I'm strangely interested in Nila's twin brother. There's something about him that I can't quite put my finger on. And I don't think it's good. And most importantly, who is Kite007?

Debt Inheritance was good. Really good. Incredible even. I was extremely engrossed in it and barely put it down. I actually read it in only two sittings. So yeah, to say I loved it is definitely an understatement. Everything about this book was excellent. The characters — interesting, enigmatic and sinful. The writing — Descriptive, gripping and captivating. The world of debts and payments — dark, wicked and erotic. Overall, a damn good book with a killer cliffhanger that makes me crave the next book more than anything!

The highly anticipated conclusion to the Monsters in the Dark series.

“After battling through hell, I brought my esclave back from the brink of ruin. I sacrificed everything—my heart, my mind, my very desires to bring her back to life. And for a while, I thought it broke me, that I’d never be the same. But slowly the beast is growing bolder, and it’s finally time to show Tess how beautiful the dark can be.”

Q gave everything to bring Tess back. In return, he expects nothing less. Tess may have leashed and tamed him, but he’s still a monster inside.

After surviving the darkness, a new dawn has begun. Twisted Together wades through black to grey, chasing the light of true love to banish the shadows forever.
Pain is a requirement, connection a necessity. But ultimately Q and Tess must face their demons, before they can embrace their future.
**

"Our souls are that of monsters born in the dark."

Twisted Together was a great conclusion to this amazingly intriguing and dark Monsters in the Dark trilogy. Everything ties up nicely and it was just as exciting and twisted as the two other books. I really enjoyed this final book.

Tess and Q are absolutely some of my favorite characters. They're both very different to read about but on the other hand they're very much the same. I liked reading their points of view equally and as always they were very interesting to read about. Even after two books with them I still had a lot to learn about both of them, especially Q. He still managed to surprise me with his darkness as well as his love for Tess. He's pretty damn amazing.

Aside from it being a little too long in my opnion, I really liked the story. In my eyes it was divided in three parts:
The beginning - where Tess and Q dealt with the aftermath of everything that happened in Quintessentially Q. I'm so glad Q got through to Tess eventually. There were a lot of really intense scenes there that I loved. They were absolutely amazing. Pepper really kept surprising me.
The middle - where it seems that Tess and Q are both getting back to their own selves, sort of... but then it soon goes to hell again. My reaction literally was: they just can't catch a break, huh? But at least it makes for a very exciting story.
And lastly, the end - It was a bit too drawn out for me. A little too long but in the end I really liked how it ended. I must admit I had to fight some tears because I felt emotional with it being the end and all.

I also really need to mention Franco. I've always liked him. Well, maybe not in the beginning but he really stood out in this book and I feel like Pepper has set the beginnings for a story of his own. I really hope that will eventually happen because he's such an intriguing and great character. So maybe someday soon!

And as always the writing was gorgeous. Pepper Winters really has a beautiful way of forming words. Her writing is probably some of my most favorite ever. I couldn't get enough of it all... The story, the characters, the darkness, the writing... It was all pretty damn great!

Favorite Quotes:
"I've never spoken about what Q did to find you, but you're stupid to let the fear keep you hostage. If you saw what he's capable of... You wouldn't be fearing anyone but the monster in your bed."
"You may have become richer in bank balance—but Tess... you made me richer in my heart. And that's fucking priceless."
"Life taught me an eternal love will demand the worst sacrifices. A transcendent love will split your soul, cleaving you into pieces. A love this strong doesn't grant you sweetness—it grants you pain. And in that pain is the greatest pleasure of all."
