Best of the Bunch - May 2012

Best of the Bunch is a monthly meme hosted by Always Lost in Stories on the last day of every month.
The aim of this meme is to look back over the books we have read and pick a favorite of that month.

This month I have read:

Lover Awakened (Black Dagger Brotherhood #3) by J.R Ward ~ 5 stars ~ My review.
Few Are Angels by Inger Iversen ~ 5 stars ~ My review.
A Fistful of Charms (The Hollows #4) by Kim Harrison ~ 4 stars.
Treachery (Nightshade #2.5) by Andrea Cremer ~ 4 stars.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Graphic Novel) by Tim Conrad ~ 1 star.
Hunting Kat by Kelley Armstrong ~ 5 stars.
House of Night: The Graphic Novel #1 by P.C. & Kristen Cast ~ 1 star ~ My review.
Running in the Dark by Inger Iversen ~ 4 stars.
Blink by Lloyd Poast ~ 5 stars ~ My review.
Nordic Fairies by Saga Berg ~ 5 stars ~ My review.

And the winner is...

Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other - six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Of these, Zsadist is the most terrifying member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

A former blood slave, the vampire Zsadist still bears the scars from a past filled with suffering and humiliation. Renowned for his unquenchable fury and sinister deeds, he is a savage feared by humans and vampires alike. Anger is his only companion, and terror is his only passion—until he rescues a beautiful aristocrat from the evil Lessening Society.

Bella is instantly entranced by the seething power Zsadist possesses. But even as their desire for one another begins to overtake them both, Zsadist’s thirst for vengeance against Bella’s tormentors drives him to the brink of madness. Now, Bella must help her lover overcome the wounds of his tortured past, and find a future with her…

Without a doubt Lover Awakened was the best book!
I love this book (and series) to no end! Lover Awakened was the best one so far, but I have still a long way to go. Zsadist is one of those characters that will always be with you. If you haven't read the BDB series, you should do it as soon as possible and I promise you, you won't regret it!

From the Review Pile #1

From the Review Pile is a meme hosted by Stepping Out of the Page every thursday.
The aim of this meme is to showcase books that you've received for review (or if you don't receive review books, any book that you own and really want to read/review) but haven't yet got around to reading, in order to give the book some extra publicity.

For my very first From the Review Pile post I'm going to feature one of the books I received from an author that I'm most looking forward to reading.

The Guardian's Wildchild by Feather Stone

Published September 27th 2011 by Omnific Publishing

Sidney Davenport is known as Wildchild to her Guardian mentor, Greystone. She rebels against rules. Wildchild is gifted in the paranormal, but carefully conceals her powers from the world. Even in the crises that threaten her life, she refuses to use her powers of telepathy, telekinesis, space/time travel. If her enemies discovered the truth of who she is, her Guardian people would be destroyed. She calls upon her spirit guides, Seamus and Celeste, to guide her through a mine field of the insane - Madame and Captain Butchart.

Sidney leaves her home on Hawk's Island to help the underground stop two people who are about to cause worldwide madness. Unskilled in esponage, she is arrested and sentanced to death. But, God help Sidney, she can't deny her attraction to the man who has orders to perform her execution - the tall, dark eyed Captain Waterhouse. He's meticulous, disciplined and lives by the strict rules expected of an officer of the American navy.

Captain Waterhouse is about to scrap his higher morals to bust out of his hell. When a female prisoner is delivered to his ship, he has no idea she is capable of turning his disciplined life into a storm of unimaginable experiences. His prisoner's enemies, he discovers, are also the ones who hold his life in the palm of their hands.
Through stunning imagery, an intricate and adventurous plot, and a strong cast of characters, Feather Stone gives readers a fast paced story woven with murder and magic.

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.

Waiting On Wednesday #18

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's selection is:

Splintered by A.G. Howard

~Expected publication: January 2013~

For sixteen years, Alyssa Gardner has lived with the stigma of being descended from Alice Liddell -- the real life inspiration for Lewis Carroll's famed novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But cruel jokes about dormice and tea parties can’t compare to the fact that Alyssa hears the whispers of bugs and flowers ... the same quirk which sent her mother to a mental institution years before.

When her mother takes a turn for the worse and the whispers grow too strong for Alyssa to bear, she seeks the origins of their family curse. A set of heirlooms and a moth tied to an unusual website lead Alyssa and her gorgeous best friend / secret crush, Jeb, down the rabbit hole into the real Wonderland, a place more twisted and eerie than Lewis Carroll ever let on.

There, creepy counterparts of the original fairytale crew reveal the purpose for Alyssa’s journey, and unless she fixes the things her great-great-great grandmother Alice put wrong, Wonderland will have her head.

Teaser Tuesdays #17

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

I'm still reading City of Lost Souls but I also started a new book on my e-Reader so today there are going to be 2 different teasers!

The voice that came from beneath the hood was crackling and low. "I have a message for you, Alec Lightwood," it said. "From Camille Belcourt."

-page 68, City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

Black hair topped his head and waved around his face, softening his otherwise sharp features, and I had the sudden urge to brush a lock of hair away from his face with my fingertips. Dark brown eyes met mine-not angry, but hard and closed-off.

Anyone can participate in Teaser Tuesdays. Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
