“Love had been given and taken and now…it had been stolen. No one steals from a thief—especially from me—and I will defend what’s mine until my dying breath. It’s not a question of what I’m willing to sacrifice but who to deserve her…”

Once upon a time, I stupidly believed if I could make Elder fall for me, everything would be perfect.
Now, I’m missing, and he’s hunting, and everything is far from our happily ever after.
He gave me his heart, and I gave him my promise, but true love isn’t sacred to others.
War is coming, disaster is brewing, and I’m not going down without a fight.
Elder is mine.
I am his.
And no one can keep us apart.

Fifth and Final Book in the USA Today Bestselling Series

The other day I realized that I never posted my review of Millions on my blog because when I read this book I was on a blogging break so here it finally is!

I'm not sure how I can find the rigth words to describe Millions. I've been really excited for this last book in the Dollar series considering how the previous book ended and the wait has been absolutely worth it. The first Dollar book will always be my favorite of the series if I really have to choose but Millions is definitely my second favorite. I loved it so much!

Millions left off where Thousands ended with Elder Prest being shot by Q Mercer and Pim being taking because Q thought she was being kept as a slave. Obviously a big part of why I loved this series finale so much was that Tess and Q played a pretty big part in it. I've really missed them since the days of the Monsters in the Dark series and I'm so glad Pepper Winters wrote them in the Dollar series. It was seriously epic with all of them together battling Elder's enemies.

But anyway back to Pim and Elder. I can't explain how much I love these two. They've both come so far and been through a lot. Their relationship was even more steady and just plain amazing in Millions and I almost cried with the epilogues. It was so beautiful and I was very happy with how it all ended. Simply perfection!

Blurb:

“Must be slim, able to stand for long periods of time, and be impervious to the cold.”
The headline caught my attention.

“Hours are negotiable, pay is minimal, clothing absolutely forbidden.”
The second line piqued my curiosity.

“Able to hold your bladder and tongue, refrain from opinions or suggestions, and be the perfect living canvas.”
The third made me scowl.

“Other attributes required: non-ticklish, contortionist, and obedient. Must also enjoy being studied while naked in a crowd.”
The fourth made me shudder.

“Call or email ‘YOUR SKIN, HIS CANVAS’ if interested in applying.”
The final made my heart race.

I should’ve kept scrolling past the advertisement.
I should’ve applied for the boring receptionist job at minimum wage.
I should’ve clicked on any other job where I got to keep my clothes on.
But I didn’t.
I applied.
My interview is tomorrow…

“What do you do when you write down all your secrets? No…that’s not enough. What do you do when you write down all your secrets and the one person who should never read them does?
I’ll tell you what you do.
You hope.”

REN
Ren didn’t know the meaning of love until he took Della for his own.
To begin with he hated her, but as the months bled into years, he learned the opposite of hate, dedicating his life to giving her everything.
Every sacrifice, every gift, he gave wholeheartedly.
But then love turned to lust and ruined everything.

DELLA
I was stupid to write my secrets down, but I’d been stupid before so it was nothing new.
I couldn’t blame him, hate him, fix him.
I tried to move on without him.
But no matter what I did, I couldn’t seem to delete the secrets I’d written.
Until something happened.
Until he came back and read my stupid secrets.
And nothing was the same after that.

My emotions are all over the place right now after reading and finishing The Girl and Her Ren. I definitely loved it more than the first book, The Boy and His Ribbon. If you have read that book and loved it, the second book will absolutely transcend it all. It was so much more of all the feels. But oh it was sad. So very sad. I still can't quite believe everything I read and the turn the story took. On the one hand I can't exactly say I'm happy with it but on the other I feel like it was worth it to read this beautiful story.

The story continued where the previous one ended where Ren had left Della because of their feelings for one another. Luckily it didn't take too long for Ren to get his shit together again and to realize he loves Della and return to her. After that they actually spend time together being happy. But eventually we start getting warning that this book might not have the greatest ending and if it does or not I won't say because I'm trying my best not to spoil this book but it's kind of hard.

I still can't say this duology is my personal favorite of all time by Pepper Winters but this was a very special story. And I do think it's one of her best ones. It wasn't just a coming of age romance for me, it was so much more. Somehow the two main characters, Della and Ren found their way into my hurt, causing me to be so affected by the whole story and especially the ending. Honestly I had expected this book to go in a whole different direction so I was definitely surprised by it all, which was actually a really good thing.

Even now as I'm writing this review I kind of want to cry because I just finished reading the book and it's all still pretty fresh in my mind. But I can't say enough how touching, heartbreaking and utterly beautiful this story was. I hope anyone who's planning on reading this book has tissues because you'll definitely need them.

Excerpt:
The fallen papers crunched beneath my boot as I shifted my weight, leaning into her, seeking an answer. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

She flinched, her eyes closing beneath an avalanche of pain.

This hurt.

Everything hurt.

“Della…please.” My calloused thumbs caressed her silky-soft skin, catching on her young perfection with my older imperfection.

Ten years separated us.

Ten years was an eternity when she was a babe and I was a boy, but now…it no longer held such power. I refused to let it because I didn’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t touch her the way I was touching her now.

She laughed quietly, full of torture and tragedy. “I did tell you. In a roundabout way.”

“You didn’t.”

“But I did.” She dared meet my eyes. “I never understood how I could touch you, hug you, kiss you, and you never knew. I didn’t know how I could hide my jealousy when you were with Cassie or later with your one-night stands. I lay awake at night analysing every sentence I said to you, amazed that you never heard what I’d been shouting for longer than I could remember.

“What do you do when you meet your soul mate? No wait…that’s too easy. What do you do when you meet your soul mate and have to spend a lifetime loving him in secret?
I’ll tell you what you do.
You lie.”

REN

Ren was eight when he learned that love doesn’t exist—that the one person who was supposed to adore him only cared how much he was worth.
His mother sold him and for two years, he lived in terror.
But then…he ran.
He thought he’d run on his own. Turned out, he took something of theirs by accident and it became the one thing he never wanted and the only thing he ever needed.

DELLA

I was young when I fell in love with him, when he switched from my world to my everything.
My parents bought him for cheap labour, just like they had with many other kids, and he had the scars to prove it.
At the start, he hated me, and I could understand why.
For years he was my worst enemy, fiercest protector, and dearest friend. But by the end…he loved me.
The only problem was, he loved me in an entirely different way to the way I loved him.
And slowly, my secret drove us apart.

The Boy and His Ribbon was something new and different than what I'm used to from Pepper Winters. She's mostly known for her dark romances but this book was a coming of age romance. 3 stars may seem a lower rating than I usually give books written by this author but I want to say that I definitely wasn't disappointed in it. It was a good read but it didn't go beyond 3 stars for me. Coming of age romances have never been my type of genre. I just like her dark romance books more. This doesn't take away any of the possitive things about The Boy and His Ribbon, though. It was quite a beautiful book.

Like I said this is something different and the beginning certainly isn't the most conventional of book beginnings. It all starts with ten-year-old Ren who's running away from the farm that he was sold to by his mother two years ago. What he doesn't know is that he's got a secret stowaway in his backpack; one-year-old Della. This might seem a little bit silly and I thought so at first too but somehow it does work for this story.

It really was a coming of age story because we seem Ren and Della growing up together through the next seventeen years. There weren't chapters of every single year but it was close enough. I wasn't the biggest fan of the childhood years because I never really liked to read about characters when they were children in any book. That's just a personal preference, I'm guessing but that's just how it is. I did like how well Ren took care of Della when she was so little and how he did everything in his power to keep her safe. It got more interesting once Della entered her teenages years, even though some of it was quite awkward for her and Ren.

Overall, The Boy and His Ribbon by Pepper Winters is a book that will definitely give its readers a rollercoaster of emotions. It was beautifully written, melancholy, touching but at times it exasperated me a bit because of the characters' choices and actions. I can't deny that it broke my heart a little, especially in those last few chapters. This also caused me to desperately want the second book, which is the conclusion to Della and Ren's story. I'm eagerly anticipating it because the way it ended left me wanting for more.

Author: Pepper Winters

The thrilling conclusion to Crown of Lies from New York Times Bestseller, Pepper Winters

TWO YEARS
Since my life changed for the second time and not necessarily for the better. Two years since I traded prison bars for streets and hunted a runaway who I'd met in an alley.

TWO DAYS
Since I forgot how to lie, woke to fists, and chased after the girl who'd been stolen from me.

TWO HOURS
To save her, rescue her, keep my lies intact. She looks at me full of hate. I look at her full of confession.

TWO MINUTES
For our relationship to switch from mutual dislike to floundering with unknowns. I've hurt her. Now, she's hurt me. I guess we're even.

TWO SECONDS
For her to listen, to see, to finally know who I am. The answer comes with hardship. The answer isn't what she wants to hear

TWO BREATHS
For me to walk out the door.

TWO HEARTBEATS
For it all to be over.

At first I was having doubts about wanting to write a review for Throne of Truth. I decided to just do it because it would seem a little silly to have this one be the only Pepper Winters that I wouldn't have reviewed. But anyway... Throne of Truth wasn't a bad read. I didn't love it, though. But I did enjoy it more than the first book, Crown of Lies.

I never really liked the two main characters of this duology. I don't know why because it doesn't happen often when a book by Pepper Winters isn't a five or four star read for me. I remember with the first book that I had issues with Penn being an absolutely bastard towards Elle an Elle being so freaking weak. Luckily this changed a bit in Throne of Truth. Elle had more confidence and Penn got over himself. However this didn't mean that I fully warmed up to them both. I definitely ended up being more of a fan of Elle because she said things like, "I don't need someone to claim me. I claim me." I was practically screaming FINALLY!

I do wish I had enjoyed the book a little more, though. Because of this it felt a little too long at times, especially towards the end and through Penn's jail time. Also, the whole Greg thing? It was a little ridiculous in my eyes. I'm sorry but as an atagonist he was so weak. I wanted to roll my eyes at him more than I can count. The writing, though, as always was really good. I can never say a bad thing about Pepper's writing because it's also lovely, quotable and pretty much perfection.

It took me almost a year to pick up and read Throne of Truth but I'm glad I did it anyway because now I have read every single book by Pepper Winters!
