Review: White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: White Hot Kiss
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: The Dark Elements #1
Publication: February 25th 2014 by Harlequin Teen

Genre: Young Adult ~ Paranormal
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Kobo

Rating: 4/5

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne… it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

It took me a long time to finally read White Hot Kiss, but I finally did it. And, not surprisingly, it was awesome. Because duh, it's JLA. I always like her stuff.

I must admit I wasn't a fan of Layla right away. At times I thought she acted a bit too childish, especially where Zayne was concerned. And I didn't like Zayne all that much either, in fact. But thankfully Layla grew on me as I read more of the story. Now I really like her!

It wasn't until Roth came into the picture that I really started loving the story. He was by far my favorite character. I loved him and Layla together so much. I also loved this world of gargoyles and demons that JLA created. Especially the part where the gargoyles came "out" ten years ago. I'm usually not a big fan of heaven/hell type of stories but I really digged this one.

Overall, White Hot Kiss was awesome. Hot gargoyles (who knew, right?) and even hotter demons made for an interesting read. The plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat and the writing was great as always. I'm a fan!

Review: Forever with You by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: Forever with You
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Wait for You #5

Publication: September 29th 2015
Genre: New Adult ~ Contemporary Romance
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository
Rating: 5/5

This review copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion or content of the review.

In the irresistibly sexy series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout, two free spirits find their lives changed by a one-night stand…

Some things you just believe in, even if you've never experienced them. For Stephanie, that list includes love. It's out there. Somewhere. Eventually. Meanwhile she's got her job at the mixed martial arts training center and hot flings with gorgeous, temporary guys like Nick. Then a secret brings them closer, opening Steph's eyes to a future she never knew she wanted—until tragedy rips it away.

Nick's self-assured surface shields a past no one needs to know about. His mind-blowing connection with Steph changes all that. As fast as he's knocking down the walls that have kept him commitment-free, she's building them up again, determined to keep the hurt—and Nick—out. But he can't walk away. Not when she's the only one who's ever made him wish for forever...

After reading Forever with You I can honestly say that Forever with You is my favorite book in this series. And I'm not just saying that because the main character is named Stephanie. ;) No, this story was simply amazing and really touched me. I even cried, and that's a pretty big deal with books for me.

This book features Stephanie and Nick. If there's any two people who are just meant to be it's these two, in my opinion. In fact, I think they were perfect for one another. It all started with a one night stand that turned into something more. I really liked reading about Steph. We read about her before in the other books where she appeared at times so it was nice to finally get inside her head.

Nick was also interesting to get to know. He was always a bit mysterious. But damn, I love him so much after reading this book. He really is a sweet and caring guy + him and Steph had some seriously hot chemistry going on. Whew!

I literally couldn't stop reading this book. I even forgot to eat dinner because I wanted to finish it so badly. This book is definitely more emotional than the others were. There were times where I just knew where the story was heading and even though I guessed what would happen I felt devastated. This story sure was a tearjerker. But that's what made the book so amazing - the emotion it evoked in me.

Jennifer L. Armentrout really did hit the jackpot with this book. I really think it's the best book in the series (so far...) because it was steamy, the pace was just right, it was touching and the characters in it were simply amazing. Bravo!

Review: Dream of You by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: Dream of You
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Wait for You #4.5

Publication: June 23rd 2015 by Evil Eye Concepts, Incorporated
Genre: New Adult ~ Contemporary Romance
Purchase: Amazon
Rating: 4/5

Abby Erickson isn't looking for a one-night stand, a relationship, or anything that involves any one-on-one time, but when she witnesses a shocking crime, she's thrust into the hands of the sexiest man she's ever seen - Colton Anders. His job is to protect her, but with every look, every touch, and every simmering kiss, she's in danger of not only losing her life but her heart also.

Jennifer L. Armentrout never disappoints. At least she hasn't so far for me. Dream of You is yet another great addition to the Wait for You series.

This story is about Abby Erickson and Colton Anders (Yep! Reece's brother!). They knew each other in high school from a distance. And although Abby had a boyfriend all through high school they did notice each other back then. They crossed paths again when Abby witnesses a murder and Colton has to protect her.

One of the things that I loved about this book —and I'm fairly sure other readers loved as well — is that it featured a main character that wasn't a perfect girl. We really need this more in the new adult genre. Abby had quite some insecurities, which I think, a lot of women can relate to. At least I did.

Abby really was great character to read about, also because she's an editor mostly for indie authors and quite a lot authors got mentioned too. I love that JLA did that. She's such a rockstar!

Colton was in one word swoonworthy. Damn them Anders brothers!  But he was also really caring and sweet towards Abby. I adored him and Abby together. They were perfect.

With 131 pages this novella is on the shorter side (compared to the full books). Sometimes novellas can feel a little rushed because they're shorter than novels but this wasn't the case at all with story. Although I finished it quickly, it felt like a nice solid book.

Overall, Dream of You wasn't quite a full four stars but it was really amazing in so many ways. It was short, yes, but Jennifer L. Armentrout really did create a full story, in my opinion. Abby was such a relatable character, as I'm sure she is for a lot of people and Colton (a.k.a. the unicorn) brought out a smile on my face more than once. Really, this series just keeps adding to my book boyfriends list. Love it!

       Quotes:
“There’s nothing more powerful than the written word. It can transfer you to a place that exists right now that you’ll never get to visit or it can take you to a world that doesn’t. It can show you things you’ll never experience otherwise in life, and books… most importantly, they can take you out of your own world, and sometimes you need that.”

“The thing was, Colton was confident and self-assured, maybe even a little cocky, but he wasn't arrogant. He was like a unicorn.”

“One of the things you never really see in a romance book is a woman who has self-esteem issues. I mean, I’m sure they’re out there, but they’re few and far between. Like they can have eating disorders, post-traumatic stress from sexual assault or mental abuse. They can be sold into sex trafficking and they can carry epic amounts of grief. We have female characters who have suffered every loss imaginable and ones who are scarred physically and mentality, but where in the hell are the average women? Ones who look in the mirror and cringe a little? Like, why are all those others acceptable to women, but reading or knowing another woman who has a low self-esteem is, like, worse than all that drama llama?”

Review: Fall with Me by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: Fall with Me
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Wait for You #4
Publication: March 31st 2015 by Avon

Genre: New Adult ~ Contemporary Romance
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Kobo
Rating: 4/5

Review copy provided in exchange for an honest review.

Eleven months ago, bartender and weird-shirt-wearing extraordinaire Roxy and Officer Reece Anders had a one night stand. Well, kind of. She’s been in love with him since she was fifteen, and he wishes that night they shared never happened. She’s sworn him off forever, but the past and future collide, forcing her to rely on the one man who broke her heart not once, but twice.

Her best friend since birth has been in a long-term care facility since he became a victim of a hate crime years ago, and the person who put him in there is out of prison and wanting to make amends with him and Roxy. She’s not sure she has room for forgiveness in her and when she begins to receive frightening messages and is on the receiving end of escalating violence, she thinks she knows who is to blame. The man who already destroyed one life already.

But Reece isn’t convinced. The threats are too personal, and even if Roxy doesn’t believe him, he’s not willing to let anyone hurt her. Including himself. He’s already messed up more than once when it comes to Roxy and he’s not going to let history repeat itself.

“I’m scared, too. And there are times I question what I deserve, but we’re in this together. So fall with me.”

Fall with Me was great! To be honest, I'm not sure what to say more that I haven't said about the other books except that it was my second favorite book in the series. I loved it.

Roxy is one cool chick who made for an awesome main character + she rocks her glasses and awesome shirts. I loved her relationship with Reece - they had chemistry, a past and they were actually good friends once. And Reece was just smoking hot. Who doesn't love a man in uniform? And he's also good and dedicated to his job.

This book is not only steamy romance, witty conversations and Roxy and Reece trying to work things out between them. There was also a lot of suspense. I liked this but I felt like Roxy should've told people sooner what was going on at her apartment. Those things were just creepy as hell.

Another thing I adored were the references to Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, Doctor Who, etc... This is just a personal quirk of mine but I love all those shows so it made this book even better. Gotta love JLA for that!

Another thing, I always love it when the characters from the other books make an appearance. It's always fun to know what's going on with them. I really enjoyed that and it made me smile.

Overall, this was just a great book. I love this series, these characters and JLA always keeps me hooked. Bring on the next book!

Review: The Return by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: The Return
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Titan #1
Publication: February 16th 2015 by Spencer Hill Press

Genre: New Adult ~ Paranormal
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Kobo
Rating: 5/5

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…

It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

Book 1 in the new adult paranormal TITAN series, spin-off to the best selling COVENANT series.

I've been a huge fan of Seth since the days of the Covenant series. So I'm sure that Seth having his own books is a pretty big deal for everyone who loves Seth. With that said, I can absolutely say that The Return was everything I expected and so much more.

This book starts a year after the Covenant series ended where Seth pledged his life to the gods after all the shit that went down. He still feels terrible about everything that happened, especially where Alex was involved. I must admit that with the Covenant books that I haven't always liked Seth because of the things he did so it's really interesting to read about his own feelings about everything that happened. When Apollo assigns Seth to protect Josie, who turns out to be not just  a mere mortal, things start changing for Seth.

Which brings us to Josie. I wasn't too sure about her in the beginning but she totally grew on me. She goes through quite a lot in this book like finding out she's a demi-god, losing her grandparents in a pretty traumatic way, all the while getting all this information dumped on her about the world of gods and that she'll have to someday fight the titans. Yeah, I think she did pretty well not totally breaking and a huge part of that was Seth, in my opinion.

You'd think with reading five Covenant books you'd might know a lot about this world, but there's so much more. I can't get enough of this world. And of course I loved Apollo being a pretty big part of this book. I adore apollo and I love his interactions with Seth. It's hilarious the way they dislike each other and Apollo being Josie's father, complicates quite a lot of things. Also a few other characters make an appearance like Alex's uncle and Deacon and Luke. I might've flipped out a little bit when I saw those last two coming in the book. I love them. They added a lot of hilarity and familiarity to the book.

So overall, The Return is one hell of a comeback for Seth. I barely stopped reading the book and I just loved Seth with Josie. I also have to say that I love that this book is new adult. I think that was a really smart decision of Jennifer L. Armentrout due to Seth being twenty-one and everything. And I happen to love her new adult books. Bring on the next one, please!

Quotes:

In the short period of time I'd been around him, I'd seen so many different sides of him. It was like the Faces of Seth. He could go from sullen and serious, to teasing and downright annoying, to mischievous and playful, to seductive and dangerlously deceptive in a matter of minutes. I'd ever known anyone in my life like him, and I doubted many people, mortal or not-so-mortal, could claim to know how his head worked.

A column of shimmery blue light pierced the cathedral ceiling, shooting down to the floor a few feet from the female Sentinel. As the light faded, a god was revealed.
The Sentinels hastily backed off. A few even dropped to their knees, unmindful of the mess on the floor. I, on the other hand, raised my right hand and scratched my brow with my middle finger.

The girl had... grit. Most mortals, after finding out they weren't exactly mortal, that spirits and Titans were after them, and that their father was a legendary god of dickdom, would've flipped their shit by this point.

Review: Wicked by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: Wicked
Author: Jennifer L Armentrout
Series: A Wicked Saga #1
Publication: December 8th 2014
Genre: New Adult ~ Paranormal Romance
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo
Rating: 4/5

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

I'm so glad I decided to read Wicked the moment it came out because it was a great book. Not only did Jennifer L. Armentrout make me laugh and snort out loud with this book (in public!), I also read liked her take on the fae.

I have to admit that I'm not Ivy's biggest fan. She grew on me through the book but she's not my favorite character ever. I like her well enough in the end so this is fine for now. I did love her relationship with Ren, though. Which brings us to Ren. Holy hotness! That guy left me in a perpetual state of having to fan myself. I really gives her other male character's a run for their money.

I also have to say that at first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book because it took me a few chapters to really get into it. But in the end JLA managed to do her thing again and make me obsessed with one of her books. So the fae... I love fae books, especially if the fae are bad. Wicked kind of reminded me of Darkfever because of the evil fae and Night Huntress without the vampires in some way. This is a good thing, by the way!

I love that this book was new adult. I love JLA's young adult books but sometimes a girl just needs some hotness in her books. And the romantic scene were pretty sizzling. I loved it! And let's talk about Tink. He was by far my favorite character. He was freaking hilarious and I laughed my ass off whenever he was in a scene. Best. Character. Ever!

I had seen most of the major twists coming, almost right from the start. I didn't really like that it was that obvious so I couldn't give it five stars, unfortunately. But still, it was fantastic and I loved all the references to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Theo James (of course), and so on and on.

All in all, Wicked was funny, sexy, action-packed and awesome in the way only Jennifer L. Armentrout can write books. There were quite a few shocking though obvious twists that I know will set the pace for the next book. I for one can't wait to read it! I would definitely recommend this really great new adult paranormal book.

Quotes:
I wasn't even sure what I could categorize as normal when I came home last night from the club and discovered that Tink had set up his own Twitter account and was engaged in a heated argument over which actor made a better Dr. Who.
"You like me." Letting go, he smiled up at me, that angelic face a picture of innocence. "You just aren't ready to admit it."
All I could think as I gawked at him was, what an observant son of a bitch.
"Don't get addicted to those. I don't want to be roomies with a junkie because then you'll move on to harder shit and end up doing bath salts and eating my face off."
