The Geography of You and MeThe Geography of You and Me
by Jennifer E. Smith
YA Contemporary Romance
April 15th 2014 by Little, Brown for Young Readers

Lucy and Owen meet somewhere between the tenth and eleventh floors of a New York City apartment building, on an elevator rendered useless by a citywide blackout. After they're rescued, they spend a single night together, wandering the darkened streets and marveling at the rare appearance of stars above Manhattan. But once the power is restored, so is reality. Lucy soon moves to Edinburgh with her parents, while Owen heads out west with his father.

Lucy and Owen's relationship plays out across the globe as they stay in touch through postcards, occasional e-mails, and -- finally -- a reunion in the city where they first met.

A carefully charted map of a long-distance relationship, Jennifer E. Smith's new novel shows that the center of the world isn't necessarily a place. It can be a person, too.

The two main characters, Lucy and Owen, from The Geography of You and Me first meet in New York, but then keep in contact from different places around the world before meeting up in New York again.

The author, Jennifer E. Smith, shared some of her favorite places in the world in preparation of Geography's release. We'd like to re-share them with you!

"First up, New York City, where I’ve lived for nearly a decade now, and where the book begins.  This city can be intense at times, but it’s also completely amazing and unlike anywhere else in the world."

"If I didn’t live in New York City, I’d almost certainly want to live in London (preferably in the lavender house above, which I’ve had picked out for years!).

I’ve been lucky enough to spend a lot of time there, and those of you who have read THE STATISTICAL PROBABILITY OF LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT will have a sense of how much I adore it.

Definitely one of my favorite places in the world."

"One of my other favorite places in the world is Ireland. I studied abroad in Limerick when I was in college, and completely fell in love with the country. I’ve been lucky enough to get back there several times since, and I can never get enough.

That’s me feeding a baby lamb at my friend’s farm in Mayo — and no, it’s not actually beer! I was so tickled to get to do this, until we went inside right afterwards for supper, which was….lamb. Ah, farm life."

Lake Tahoe is another one of my favorite places.  My family has gone pretty much every summer for the last fifteen years or so, and it’s absolutely beautiful. Another place I wish could be today…

My last favorite place for the day.  This is Doubtful Sound in New Zealand, where my sister and I went three years ago, just a few days after a devastating earthquake in Christchurch. (We’re wearing matching sweatshirts because we couldn’t ever get back to our bags, since our hotel was right next to the fallen cathedral.)
It was so odd to find ourselves in one of the most peaceful places on earth just days after experiencing one of the most chaotic ones, and it was exactly what we needed at the time.  I think of this place often, and I hope to visit it again someday…

"St. Andrews in Scotland. When I daydream, this is usually what’s on my mind.  I went to grad school here, and it was one of the best years of my life. I love this place so much, and part of THE GEOGRAPHY OF YOU AND ME is set in Scotland just so I had an excuse to keep daydreaming about it."

Another one of my favorite places is San Francisco. I think the picture says it all: hills, water, sailboats, nice weather. What’s not to love?

And Paris…because who doesn’t love Paris?

  1. My favourite place in the world is the beach! :) I just love it because you can either go with friends or family and have fun or by yourself with a book and relax :)

By the way, on the "add the book to goodreads" step, the link doesn't take you The Geography of you and me on Goodreads, it takes you to a different book.
    Thanks for the giveaway! :)

My favorite place is Miramare Castle in Trieste. I went there on a school trip, years ago during spring, and I still vividly remember how breathtaking the sight was! I'd like to go there again, but I'd also love to visit Ireland and Scotland!
