Throwback Thursday #24: The Emperor's Conspiracy by Michelle Diener

Throwback Thursday is a bookish meme hosted every two weeks by me and Christina @ Booksane where we feature books that we've read in the past but are still crazy about. It could be a book you read as a child and still remember and love or maybe just a book that you haven't read in a long time and want to show your love for.
Each week we'll be featuring a new random question to answer!

The Emperor's Conspiracy by Michelle Diener
Historical Fiction
Read from October 09 to 13, 2012

From nineteenth-century London’s elegant ballrooms to its darkest slums, a spirited young woman and a nobleman investigating for the Crown unmask a plot by Napoleon to bleed England of its gold.

Chance led to Charlotte Raven’s transformation from chimney sweep to wealthy, educated noblewoman, but she still walks a delicate tightrope between two worlds, unable to turn her back on the ruthless crime lord who was once her childhood protector.

When Lord Edward Durnham is tapped to solve the mystery of England’s rapidly disappearing gold, his search leads him to the stews of London, and Charlotte becomes his intriguing guide to the city’s dark, forbidding underworld. But as her involvement brings Charlotte to the attention of men who have no qualms about who they hurt, and as Edward forges a grudging alliance with the dangerous ghosts of Charlotte’s former life, she faces a choice: to continue living in limbo, or to close the door on the past and risk her heart and her happiness on an unpredictable future.

This was the first book by Michelle Diener I read. I got it for review and it was a direct hit for me. I had found my favorite historical fiction writer. Seriously, her books are amazing and this one has always been my favorite (together with Daughter of the Sky). So yeah I just love it. Like all of Michelle's books!

Also fun to know is that one of her other books, "Banquet of Lies" is connected to The Emperor's Conspiracy. =D

Quote:
He was all but shouting, stalking toward her. He grabbed her arms and gave her a little shake. "This time, the bastards don't win. I win."
"What do you win?" she whispered.
He bent his head and crushed his lips to hers.

This has always been my favorite quote of the book. It's between Charlotte Raven and Edward Durnham. How I love Edward!

Question of this week:

Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?

I prefer reading one book at a time, so I can concentrate on one story only and not get things mixed up or anything but it usually doesn't work out that way because lately I've find myself reading several books at once. Because of buddy reads, books for review or just my own weird reading quirks. Oh well... =D

-- Next Question (May 1st):

Activity: Pick from the books you own on your shelf your top 5 and take a picture of it --
