A Thief Among Fae is Maddy Calder's debut novel and honestly? You'd never guess this was a debut novel because the writing feels like the work of someone who's been writing books for years. It was a really good story with fantastic characters and very well-written. I'm already looking forward to the next book!

The story follows Cynthia a.k.a. Cyn who's been tomb raiding with the help of her magic in hopes of securing her parents and younger sister a better future. When she makes a binding deal with the mysteryious fae prince Desmond, who's also known as the Prince of Death, she joins him and a crew of thieves on a mission to break into a cursed king’s tomb. But as they face deadly dangers and uncover secrets about Desmond’s forbidden necromancy, their growing attraction makes the bargain far more complicated than either expected.

I do have to admit it took me a good 25%-30% to really get into the story. TThe beginning was a little slow, probably because there was quite a bit of world-building needed to properly set the scene. But this was totally worth it once I got to know more acquainted with this fantasy world and the characters in it. I ended up really falling in love with the story. What I loved the most was the adventure of the tomb raiding (I cannot express how fun this was to read about!) and how there was almost non-stop action. This made for a really exciting read!

Also, if you mention necromancy in a fantasy book, I'm so there and I was not left disappointed with it in A Thief Among Fae. On top of that, I really enjoyed the romance. The slow-burn between Cynthia and Desmond had plenty of chemistry and tension, without ever taking over the main plot. The secondary characters were also all a great bunch to read about and each brought something unique to the story that I ended up loving.

A Thief Among Fae by Maddy Calder had everything I look for in a fantasy romance: dangerous adventures, magic, fae, a cursed tomb and a slow-burn romance with plenty of tension. It was a solid debut that left me excited to see where the series goes next.

The simulation brings me back with a jolt. I land on the floor on all fours, choking on the saltwater burning my throat. Like before, once my brain catches up with reality, all the pain goes away. I hang my head and breathe easy.

If that isn’t a miserable attempt, I don’t know what is. Ry passed this level on her first try. This military stuff came naturally to her. When we were kids, the placement test put Ry and me in the Military Sector, but I never belonged or excelled the way she did.

The sleek white walls shine bright around me. Seconds later, Captain Weston’s boots come into view. When I glance up, he cocks an eyebrow at me with both hands braced on his hips. He blows out a breath, and I swear a tinge of pity flashes across his face.

“I didn’t pass your test.” I sit back on my ankles, shaking uncontrollably.

“Everyone dies in the simulation. You did better than I expected.” He scratches the stubble on his chiseled jaw. “But I do have my work cut out for me.”

“No.” I assume he means cadets from my unit. To Captain Weston, Valorek and his friends didn’t count.

“Good.” He clears his throat. “Because I have a proposal for you.”

When I open my mouth to speak, he brings his index finger to his lips and shakes his head once. Of course, he doesn’t want to hear about how Ry’s death wasn’t an accident. We have been doing the same song and dance for weeks. This time, I do as he asks and keep quiet, but only because it looks like I am about to get what I want—an opportunity to join the Queen’s immortal army, where I’ll have the ability to look into Ry’s murderer myself.

“You need something from me.” I meet his gaze.

“We need you to take your sister’s place as a lieutenant in the Queen’s army. You still need a lot of training before you can join Ry’s unit, but we have a bit of time.”

When I pause long enough to go to the bar and get some water, I bump unsteadily into someone. “Sorry,” I manage, clapping a hand on the tall man’s shoulder in apology. Not being a British royal usually has its advantages in London. Less recognition, for starters. I’ve lived in London for years now, away from Denmark. I get less than I would get back home anyway, unless on the off chance I come across a Dane or a Danish monarchy enthusiast. Which, surprisingly, happens more often than one might think.

Except I’m hardly being subtle tonight. I want to be seen. Straightening to my full height, I stand my ground in defiance.

Let them photograph me. I insist.

I want Aidan to know what he’s missing. He’ll be sorry then, him and his wretched groom.

Except it doesn’t make things any better, and then it dawns on me I’ve still been gawping openly at a gorgeous man, with olive skin and black hair and blue eyes. Which, I’ve got to say, is a stunning combination known to do a number on me. He’s mesmerizing. I gawp like a tourist taking in one of the wonders of the world. Believe me, he’s one of them. Usually, I’m a shade more coy, to my credit, but I’ve had a lot to drink tonight, and my filter is off. In fact, my filter’s probably tossed somewhere deep in the Thames, like a votive offering right alongside some Bronze Age weapons and Roman coins.

“Prince Theodor?” He has an accent that I can’t quite place. It’s totally hot, though.

“Guilty,” I say flippantly, recovering in an artful facade of manners. I run a hand through my hair. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to crash into you. Shockingly rude. Would you like me to get you a drink to make up for it? Please.”

“No need. Already have one.” The man holds up his cocktail, complete with little umbrella and some fancy garnishes. His eyes dance. “You don’t know who I am?”

If I hadn’t been busy staring at his face like I was trying to etch it into my memory for all time, I would have maybe looked at his hand with its cocktail. Confession time. “To be honest, I barely know who I am right now.”

“Fair.” The grin he gives is spectacular, easy, almost familiar. His white teeth match his white shirt. I shiver. “I can see why you might want to forget tonight. Bad luck about the news.”

Now he looks sympathetic. My face burns.

Oh, hell.

Does everyone follow the tabloids? God, has everyone seen my embarrassment coming before I did?

Even so, do I want to forget this stranger? The probability in truth is at around nil. Around us, the dance music thumps on, people laugh and carry on around the bar where we stand in the shifting strobe lights from the dance floor, all purple and pink and blue.

And then, everything comes crashing down again as his words belatedly register in my brain. My mouth hangs slightly open. So much for finding the evening’s prospect. He’s murdered my opening.

“Ouch, man.” My suaveness has gone right out the door of the club and died on the Soho street. Probably by drowning in a well-trodden puddle. “You had to remind me about the news.”

“Sorry.” He looks contrite. Then he searches my eyes, with amusement lingering in his. There’s no malice that I can see, which makes for a refreshing change, at least. “You really don’t know who I am?”

“How rude, I should have asked your name. I’m sorry, my manners have vanished. Terribly sorry. What’s your name, then?” I ask.

He laughs easily, shrugging. “It’s Stefanos.”

I go back to staring. Something is at last clicking into place through an absinthe-induced fog. No wonder he looks a little familiar. “As in, Prince Stefanos?”

That would be Prince Stefanos of the former Greek monarchy. The Greek Royal Family remains, but in exile outside of Greece, spread across Europe.

“Yes.” Stefanos bows his head. There’s something completely charming in the gesture, almost shy. Certainly self-effacing. “And I’m very sorry about the reminder of the tabloids. I know they’re a pain for all of us.”

“You just re-reminded me,” I complain, but I’m smiling, despite the miserable night he seems to insist on reminding me about, like he’s delighting in a few more twists of the knife. And despite my best efforts to forget about Aidan. A stab wound is like that. My gut twinges. Or maybe it’s the drinks protesting in my stomach.

At any rate, I’m distracted by Stefanos, the moment of his glossy hair as he laughs again, ducking his head down as he breaks my riveted gaze.

“I’ve got to say, the prince-per-capita rating in this club is off the charts tonight.” I gaze openly at him, leaning ever so slightly in. Yes, he’s hot. Confirmed. As if there were any question about his hotness. The evening’s at last starting to look better and better. Thank fuck.

“Absolutely—”

Then, in turn, someone careens into me—and my flirting is officially cancelled.

Because it’s officially messy o’clock at the bar before last call.

And I’m drunk enough to not have my bones left for balance—and I crash hard, my drink splashing him first—and I fall hard right into Stefanos’s chest.

I bought this book last summer at a thrift store for a very cheap price. It's a slightly older book but I really liked the cover and how the description of the story spoke to me. It sounded like a magical adventure, which is exactly what it was.

I thought Viviane was a great heroine. She wasn't just a typical princess that needed help everywhere she went. She knew how to ask for help when she needed it but mostly went off on her own a lot to fulfill her quest. I also liked that she had a really great group of friends who supported her.

I definitely liked Prince Caradawc, Viviane's fiance. I wasn't so sure about them at first, but I quickly warmed up to them. Especially when they kept being seperated, that's when I started really rooting for them. I just loved the whole doomed lovers aspect that they had going on.

The villain of the story, Idoc, was really intriguing to me (I know, shocker.) At first he seemed to be plain evil, but the more I read about him the more I realized he definitely was redeemable, which is something that Viviane saw as well. I also thought it was interesting how most of the characters were all connected in a way, since in another life, centuries ago, they also knew each other. In fact, Viviane used to be a celtic priestess in that former life, as well as the lover of Idoc before he got taken over by dark forces. In this story they had to stop those particular dark forces again as they did in their previous life.

I obviously enjoyed the whole story arc with Viviane, Caradawc and Idoc but the one character that stood out to me was Olwen. I loved her personality and her budding romance with another character called Gerin. She really ended up shining in the story, even though to me she started out as a pretty ordinary character. Gotta love that!

Overall, The Tower and the Emerald by Moyra Caldecott was an unexpected but great magical story. It had romance, dark knights, fierce battles and the writing was beautiful!

At first I was having doubts about wanting to write a review for Throne of Truth. I decided to just do it because it would seem a little silly to have this one be the only Pepper Winters that I wouldn't have reviewed. But anyway... Throne of Truth wasn't a bad read. I didn't love it, though. But I did enjoy it more than the first book, Crown of Lies. 

I never really liked the two main characters of this duology. I don't know why because it doesn't happen often when a book by Pepper Winters isn't a five or four star read for me. I remember with the first book that I had issues with Penn being an absolutely bastard towards Elle an Elle being so freaking weak. Luckily this changed a bit in Throne of Truth. Elle had more confidence and Penn got over himself. However this didn't mean that I fully warmed up to them both. I definitely ended up being more of a fan of Elle because she said things like, "I don't need someone to claim me. I claim me." I was practically screaming FINALLY!

I do wish I had enjoyed the book a little more, though. Because of this it felt a little too long at times, especially towards the end and through Penn's jail time. Also, the whole Greg thing? It was a little ridiculous in my eyes. I'm sorry but as an atagonist he was so weak. I wanted to roll my eyes at him more than I can count. The writing, though, as always was really good. I can never say a bad thing about Pepper's writing because it's also lovely, quotable and pretty much perfection. 

It took me almost a year to pick up and read Throne of Truth but I'm glad I did it anyway because now I have read every single book by Pepper Winters!

Oh I loved this extended epilogue. It was the perfect mix of sexy and sweet. I kind of wish all of Pepper's books had longer epilogues like this one. It would be perfect for all her books. And if any of her characters deserve to live happily ever after it's definitely Nila and Jethro because of all the shit they went through.

This book takes place over the course of quite a few years. We see Jethro and Nila getting married, settling into their lives at Hawksridge Hall, having their first baby and a few years later their second. The names of their kids, Kestrel and Emma made me cry a little. I still miss Jethro's brother, Kes. We also see what life brings for Vaughn and Jasmine, which I thought was really nice because I've been shipping them every since they met. I'm glad they got their happily ever after as well. *cries some more*

This book isn't dark like the rest of the series. It focuses more on how happy Nila and Jethro are now and what life is bringing them. But there are a couple of very steamy scenes at least. I mean, it's still a story by Pepper Winters, so what did you expect? I just love the way she balances the sexy and sweet. It was perfection. And I'm already missing these characters.

I'm glad I finally got around to reading the last few books in this series because I had kind of forgotten how much I love the Indebted books. Nila and Jethro won't ever beat my love for Tess and Q but they're coming pretty damn close. 

I feel like I can't really say a lot about this book, even though I really enjoyed it. First of all, I didn't stop to write my review right away but went straight to Final Debt after finishing. This might have been a mistake but I just couldn't wait. Second, because I felt like this was a prologue to everything that would happen in Final Debt, which blew my mind. It's hard not to say a lot of things that would spoil it for readers who might not have read this book but of course I will do my best.

Fourth Debt picks up right after Third Debt, obviously. You can say that the ending of Third Debt was pretty intense with Jethro and Kes being shot (presumably) to death. I really felt for Nila in this book because as she was dealing with her grieve as well as having almost no allies anymore at Hawksridge. And honestly, I never hated the Hawks as much as I did in this book. I could never really decide who I disliked more Bonnie or Daniel. Weirdly enough I have never been able to fully hate Cut, although he's a dispicable human being.

It's also been close to three years since I read the previous books. I got sidetracked by other books but even so I was right back into the world of the debt inheritance. And I gotta say this is probably one of Pepper's more cruel and dark books. The things that happen in these books... wow. I love it, though, in a sinister sort of way.

Overall, Fourth Debt by Pepper Winters was a really great read. I definitely enjoyed the book even though Nila and Jethro were apart for most of it. It was a great addition to the Indebted series.
