Lada Dracul has no allies. No throne. All she has is what she’s always had: herself. After failing to secure the Wallachian throne, Lada is out to punish anyone who dares to cross her blood-strewn path. Filled with a white-hot rage, she storms the countryside with her men, accompanied by her childhood friend Bogdan, terrorizing the land. But brute force isn’t getting Lada what she wants. And thinking of Mehmed brings little comfort to her thorny heart. There’s no time to wonder whether he still thinks about her, even loves her. She left him before he could leave her.

What Lada needs is her younger brother Radu’s subtlety and skill. But Mehmed has sent him to Constantinople—and it’s no diplomatic mission. Mehmed wants control of the city, and Radu has earned an unwanted place as a double-crossing spy behind enemy lines Radu longs for his sister’s fierce confidence—but for the first time in his life, he rejects her unexpected plea for help. Torn between loyalties to faith, to the Ottomans, and to Mehmed, he knows he owes Lada nothing. If she dies, he could never forgive himself—but if he fails in Constantinople, will Mehmed ever forgive him?

As nations fall around them, the Dracul siblings must decide: what will they sacrifice to fulfill their destinies? Empires will topple, thrones will be won . . . and souls will be lost.

Now I Rise was more than a worthy sequel to And I Darken. Things were definitely way more intense in this one, I must say. But the story was just magnificent. I absolutely loved it!

There's something I want to say first before getting around to the rest of my review. I know a lot of people think these books are fantasy. It is definitely not. It does not have a single fantasy element. To remind everyone, it's about a gender-swapped Vlad the Impaler and it's (mostly) set in the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century with events happening that actually took place.

So let's be honest, Lada is one of the most brilliant main characters out there right now. She is terrible and terrifying and I absolutely love her for that. In this book she was quite brutal in how she would do anything to secure the Wallachian throne, which is exactly what she did. A lot of the things she did were really questionable but I wouldn't expect any less from her.

Radu was probably my favorite character this time around. I felt like he was in the spotlight a lot more in this book than his sister. His part mostly takes plays in Constanstinople where Mehmhed has send him to be a spy. His wife Nazira comes along with him, which I thought was a very good idea. Although their relationship is purely platonic, I love their dynamic. But it sure wasn't easy everything he went through in Constanstinople and playing a double agent.

A lot of the secondary characters were really great to read about as well. I already mentioned Nazira but I also liked the new character of Cyprian who ended up being friends with Radu and ultimately they both broke my heart... With Lada I really liked that Bogdan remained so loyal to her. I actually really like all of Lada's men who follow her. Their loyalty was something Lada really needed. Mehmhed wasn't a lot around in this book because the most part took place away from him so I don't actually have a lot to say about him.

Overall, Now I Rise was every bit as amazing as And I Darken Was. Maybe even a little bit more so. I have said it before and I will say it again, these books are Kiersten White's best work so far. I can't wait for the next book!

No one expects a princess to be brutal. And Lada Dragwyla likes it that way.

Ever since she and her brother were abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman sultan’s courts, Lada has known that ruthlessness is the key to survival. For the lineage that makes her and her brother special also makes them targets.

Lada hones her skills as a warrior as she nurtures plans to wreak revenge on the empire that holds her captive. Then she and Radu meet the sultan’s son, Mehmed, and everything changes. Now Mehmed unwittingly stands between Lada and Radu as they transform from siblings to rivals, and the ties of love and loyalty that bind them together are stretched to breaking point.

The first of an epic new trilogy starring the ultimate anti-princess who does not have a gentle heart. Lada knows how to wield a sword, and she'll stop at nothing to keep herself and her brother alive.

This book is about the life of Vlad the impaler. The twist in this story is that it's genderbended so Vlad has become Lada. I thought this was such a great idea for a book and it totally works in this story.

Also, this book doesn't have any paranormal of fantasy elements.  It's more like a historical fiction since these things did happen to the real Vlad. I actually know a bit about his life and the Ottoman Empire since I'm a bit of a history nerd and I thought it was great. But keep in mind that the author had to take some liberties with writing this book.

The book is written in both points of view of Lada and her brother Radu. This made it all  interesting because they both were so very different. Lada is a very brutal character. She is a warrior inside and out, who just doesn't want to be forgotten. She also hates the Ottoman Empire. She wasn't a very nice person and actually kills some people in this book but I did love her. She was so very different from other YA female characters.

Radu was a whole different story. He started out as having a rather weak personality and always being bested by his sister, Lada. Unlike her, he actually is nice and everyone likes him. He learns to find his place in the Ottoman Empire. The only thing they have in common is their feelings for Mehmed, the sultan's son, who eventually becomes the sultan also.

This book really did hit all the right spots in my heart. It had the right amount of history, action and it was written wonderfully. I had a hard time putting it down and actually stayed up until 4am to finish it.  I also thought the little bit of romance that was in this story was actually done so greatly.

Overall, And I Darken was nothing short of brilliant. It's my favorite book by Kiersten White right now and it's definitely her best book yet so far, in my opinion. I just loved it!

Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be...kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.

But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.

So much for normal.

First of all, I have to say that I'm a huge Kiersten White fan and I loved Paranormalcy  so it really pains me to have to write a rather negative review for Supernaturally. I just thought the book fell a little flat for me. It was just okay for me and nothing more.

So like I said I loved the first book. I really did. The reason why I didn't like this one was that it was rather boring (I'm so sorry, Kiersten!). I hate to say this but it's just the way I felt. I felt like nothing really happened. Nothing too major anyway. And maybe it was just me but I felt that Evie was so freaking whiny in this book and if there's one thing I can't stand it's whiny heroines. The sad thing is, I liked her a lot in Paranormalcy. *sad face*

There were a few good points though that I think I should mention. One of these points are all the unique paranormal creatures. This book is full of them and that was probably the thing I liked best. I always love books that have several creatures that are either unique or unknown to me. So bonus points for that. Also, I love the faeries. I know they're kind of shady in this series but I can't help myself, I love faeries. And Reth, I love him too. Don't judge me.

The other characters weren't too eye-catching, however. I used to think Lend was adorable but now I'm rather "meh" about him. Jack, though, was pretty interesting. At first he seemed like this real happy-go-lucky guy but turns out he had a hidden agenda. I can't say I blame him, though. He went through pretty shitty things with the faeries.

Supernaturally was not a good sequel to Paranormalcy in my eyes. It was pretty dull with a very whiny main character and nothing too major happening. I did read it super fast, however and it's easy to get into a book by Kiersten White. I really like her writing, even in this book. Will I read the final book? Probably but I'm not in any hurry to buy it right away.

Evie's always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shape-shifter, and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours.

But Evie's about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

It's official! I'm addicted to Kiersten White's books. I've read Mind Games, Perfect Lies, The Chaos of Stars and they were all pretty good. Yet I still hadn't read what I think are her most popular books, the Paranormalcy series. So now that I have finally read Paranormalcy I can only say, wow! I've always had a thing for these type of books where there's lots of different paranormal creatures. I mean, the main character has a mermaid for a best friend, a faerie for an ex-boyfriend and then there's vampires, shifters, hags, banshees and so on. How could I not totally love this book?

Evie was such a fun main character. I liked following her story, her voice was great to read about and even though she has to do a lot of things normal sixteen-year-old girls don't have to like hunt down creatures of the night and tag them, she's still very much a teenage girl who loves pink, teen tv shows and who just wants to not be alone. I loved how she wanted to know how a normal life would be and her obsession with normal stuff like lockers. Kiersten White definitely has a knack with creating interesting characters.

The story also was pretty damn awesome. You just know there's something about Evie and slowly but surely everything gets revealed. I just love that. Paranormalcy was a good story with a very good plot. It was also definitely a more light-ish, cute and quick book to read. One of the reasons I loved it so.

I really liked all the side characters in Evie's life. Let's start with Evie's best friend, Lish, who is a freaking mermaid, thank you very much. I adored Lish. And the way Kiersten White wrote her...So funny, so great and such a good friend to Evie. Too bad things went a little dramatic there with her...
I also really liked her faerie ex-boyfriend, Reth. Some might not think he's a great guy but I sort of have an obsession with faeries and I don't know... I liked Reth. Then there was Lend, the shapeshifter. He was adorable. The romance between him and Evie was so nicely done. There was no rush or anything which was a huge relieve cause I am not a fan of insta-love. Anyway, I approved.

Overall, Paranormalcy by Kiersten White was such a huge pageturner. The story, the amazing characters, the writing, the action, everything! I loved it all. I can't wait to get my hands on the second book and read where the story is going to take Evie next.

Annie and Fia are ready to fight back.

The sisters have been manipulated and controlled by the Keane Foundation for years, trapped in a never ending battle for survival. Now they have found allies who can help them truly escape. After faking her own death, Annie has joined a group that is plotting to destroy the Foundation. And Fia is working with James Keane to bring his father down from the inside.

But Annie's visions of the future can't show her who to trust in the present. And though James is Fia's first love, Fia knows he's hiding something. The sisters can rely only on each other - but that may not be enough to save them.

~My Thoughts:

I have read the first book, Mind Games, pretty recently and really liked it. It was different, original, so I couldn't wait to start the sequel, Perfect Lies, to see what was going to happen next with all my favorite characters.

Perfect Lies was not a great book, oh no, it was a fantastic book! I was entertained right from the start and ended up liking it even more than Mind Games. A sequel of a book is either hit or miss and this book was absolutely a hit!

The story in Perfect Lies gripped me even more than with Mind Games. I guess the reason to that was that this time I wasn't confused with what was going on. I knew what is was about and could follow it without any doubts. It was all more dangerous and excited to read about for some reason.

A lot of the characters stood out way more now, while other characters I liked before moved down on my favorite list.
Fia is still amazing and kind of scary to read about. I love how she's still willing to do anything to protect her sister, even if it is destroying her inside.
I didn't particulary liked or hated Annie in Mind Games. It's not that she was annoying or anything, I just couldn't connect with her character and she was always so good and sometimes even boring. But now? Now I think she's pretty badass. She grows a lot during this book and even her blindness doesn't stop her from learning to defend herself and kicking some butt.
James on the other hand, I'm so frustrated with. I used to love him. He was my favorite male character and now he's way down on the list due to some events that happened in Perfect Lies. I came to dislike him quite a bit.
Some characters we met in the previous book we came to learn more about now like Sarah, Cole and Rafael... and boy do I love Cole! He is amazing. *swoons* I just know I want to read a whole lot more about him. Him and Annie together... Can I just say, adorable! But of course this book isn't all about love, naturally. It's more about the powers of the girls and the Keane foundation. The big boss, Mr. Keane is still an asshole, no surprise there. He's still doing awful things but now he has Fia joining him. Together with James she wants to try to take him down from the inside. Will it work or not? If you want to know, read the book!

Overall, Perfect Lies was even better than Mind Games. It has more of everything. More danger. More excitement. More romance. More death. It's a must-read for fans of this series, fans of Kiersten White or just anyone who loves a good psychological paranormal thriller! Just read it.

Review: Mind Games by Kiersten White

Title: Mind Games

Fia was born with flawless instincts. Her first impulse, her gut feeling, is always exactly right. Her sister, Annie, is blind to the world around her—except when her mind is gripped by strange visions of the future.

Trapped in a school that uses girls with extraordinary powers as tools for corporate espionage, Annie and Fia are forced to choose over and over between using their abilities in twisted, unthinkable ways…or risking each other’s lives by refusing to obey.

In a stunning departure from her New York Times bestselling Paranormalcy trilogy, Kiersten White delivers a slick, edgy, heartstoppingly intense psychological thriller about two sisters determined to protect each other—no matter the cost.

~My Thoughts:

So far I've read only one book by Kiersten White which was The Chaos of Stars, a book with Egyptian mythology in it. I loved it so I wanted to try another book by this author to see if I was going to like it as much also. I really wanted to try Mind Games because it seemed really great and how could I resist that gorgeous cover? Anyways... I've seen a lot of mixed reviews of it — the usual extremes of only one, two stars or four, five stars. Because of that it's always hard to tell what you will think of it, personally. And I must admit, starting it the first fifty pages or so were kind of slow and I didn't know what to think of it. It doesn't mean it was bad or anything... I just needed something to pigue my interest. (That's why it didn't get a full five stars.)

Mind Games introduces us to two girls, sisters. Fia is the younger one who has flawless instinct. She acts first, never thinking always knowing what is right and what is wrong. Her older sister, Annie, is blind except when she has her future visions, where she can see clearly as you and me can. Together they are trapped in a school that's run by the Keane foundation where they use both Fia and Annie plus other girls who also have special abilities for their own gain. Fia and Annie have to keep using their gifts or risk each others lives and that's just not something they are willing to risk.

This book was fast-paced and shocking but very enjoyable for me. Its characters were brilliant and yet messed up in their own ways. Kiersten White has created a very intense world with the school Fia and Annie are trapped. I could practually smell, taste and feel Fia and Annie's desperation to protect each other. Especially Fia was very harsh and fierce to read about because she's so broken by everything she had to do to protect her sister.

Mind Games felt right from the beginning very different from other books. I've never read anything like it. The overall story makes it very interesting as did the characters. It has both the sister's point of view, but also flashbacks about what happened before, taking place so far back as ten years ago to six months back, also in both Fia and Annie's perspective.

Aside from the two main characters we had a bunch of others. Some you will like, some you will hate. But really, all these people from the Keane foundation are awful. I can't understand why someone would be willing to work there. Anywho... we also have James Keane. Yes, Keane as in the Keane foundation. He's the son of the Mr. Keane who calls the shot. He's one of the love interests for Fia. Though it's not like there's a lot of romance in it, just the potential for romance, especially with Adam. Fia has a lot of history with James but things actually feel right with Adam. But before I give too much away I must say personally I like James more. People will probably call me crazy but what can I say, I like the bad ones.

The ending of this book was freaking shocking. I was freaked out by everything that was happening suddenly. Shit really did hit the fan. It only made me crave the sequel even more. I'm really glad I was able to score it already! I can tell you I will be reading it soon because I can't wait to read about what's going to happen next. I'm sure it's going to be really exciting as well.

Mind Games by Kiersten White was really as author Holly Black says on the cover of my copy, "A brutal, exciting gem of a book." It's the perfect description of it. It was all that and more. I was surprised by how captivated I was by it. A definite must-read for fans of psychological thrillers with paranormal twists.

Genre: Young Adult ~ Mythology
Format: e-arc from Edelweiss
Cover Rating: 5/5 (Gorgeous!)
Overall Rating: 4/5

Isadora’s family is seriously screwed up.

Of course, as the human daughter of Egyptian gods, that pretty much comes with the territory. She’s also stuck with parents who barely notice her, and a house full of relatives who can’t be bothered to remember her name. After all, they are going to be around forever—and she’s a mere mortal.

Isadora’s sick of living a life where she’s only worthy of a passing glance, and when she has the chance to move to San Diego with her brother, she jumps on it. But Isadora’s quickly finding that a “normal” life comes with plenty of its own epic complications—and that there’s no such thing as a clean break when it comes to family. Much as she wants to leave her past behind, she can’t shake the ominous dreams that foretell destruction for her entire family. When it turns out there may be truth in her nightmares, Isadora has to decide whether she can abandon her divine heritage after all.

First of all, I apologize for the extremely long review but I had so much to say! I hope it doesn't scare people off. *-*

I got this book really early from the lovely people at Edelweiss and HarperTeen. So thank you!
I couldn't believe it at first actually because I hadn't known about this book for very long. I saw it on Goodreads only the week before and my eyes almost fell out of their sockets because of the gorgeous cover (I might even buy the print book once it comes out because I love the cover so much) and the amazing description. "the human daughter of Egyptian gods" Yeah. I just knew I had to have it. I've been intrigued by ancient Egypt and their mythology for as long as I can remember. Ever since I was a kid, I started reading informative books about it. Very nerdy, but what can I say? I'm such a historu and mythology fan. Ancient Egypt (after reading books) was my first love. But surprisingly, I had never really read a fictional book about ancient Egypt until now. So far I've always read more about Greek mythology but I'm so glad my first one about ancient Egyptian mythology was The Chaos of Stars because I enjoyed it so much and Kiersten White did such an amazing job on it.

Initially, I was rather anxious to read this book because I didn't want anything to mess with my love for ancient Egypt. I didn't want a book to mess it up, if that makes any sense. And also because this is my very first Kiersten White book. I know her from her Paranormalcy books although I haven't read them yet and of course also her more recent Mind Games book, which I also haven't read yet, unfortunately, but I heard great things about all her books. So I did look forward to finally reading a book of hers.
Also another reason why I was a little scared to start The Chaos of Stars is that I saw a lot of mixed reviews of it on Goodreads. It was repeatedly 4 and 5 stars OR 1 star or even did not finish ratings. Personally, I don't get how someone can't finish a book this great but everyone has their taste.

The Chaos of Stars is about sixteen-year-old Isadora who's the child of gods. She feels that because, her parents didn't grant her immortality, that they don't love her and barely notice her. More importantly she doesn't believe in love in any shape anymore. When the opportunity presents itself to move from Egypt to San Diego, to live with her brother for a while, naturally she jumps on the chance to do so. Once in San Diego things seem more complicated than ever. She finds new friends and even a cute boy steps into her life but when dark dreams take hold of Isadora, it might mean the end of her family all together. Can she embrace her heritage before it's all too late?

I really enjoyed this book. I actually read it in 24 hours. Yes, that's right, one day! That never happens! I was sucked right into it because of all the egyptian gods and the mythology of it all. Although, I have to say that the mythology was more on the background and it was really about Isadora coming to terms with who she is, finding her place and how she fits into the chaos of her family. I loved reading about how Isadora fit into this family. We got quite a lot of information about the history of these gods. Everything that happened to them in the past and how it all came to be.

“Soap operas got nothing on my family history.”

This would've been too much if it wasn't for the brilliant way Kiersten White wrote it. She always gave us a little bit more information at the beginning of each chapter. We also stepped into Isadora's very dark and frightening dreams, that was also nicely done. Really, all of that, the information about the mythology in Isadora's voice which always turned a little funny at the and and the mysterious dreams I loved so much.

The characters were all very interesting from the gods themselves to even Isadora's friends and even the bad guys were amusing. Some I liked more than others but I especially loved the dynamic of Isadora's friends; Tyler, Scott and Ry. Tyler was hilarious. It makes me wish I could be her friend too. Her boyfriend, Scott was also so much fun. And, Ry, well, what can I say about him? He's just too cute. Definitely book boyfriend material! I fell for him because of how he writes epic poems, they way his eyes are so blue that Isadora sometimes asks not to look at her (*chuckle chuckle*) and of course to top it all of he had to have a dimple. Dimples are a big weakness for me! So, yeah, I love Ry. And there's more to him that meets to eye. ;)
Besides Isadora's friends I also really liked her brother, Sirus where she comes to stay with. He's really nice and I also like his pregnant wife a lot. I think they are just what Isadora needs. To see how much they love each other and how much they already love their unborn child. I feel they really had an impact on Isadora, even when she didn't see it herself.
My favorite god in this book was Thoth, he was awesome. He talked with bird puppets (or whatever you wanna call it) and seems a little bit looney but in the end he really got through for Isadora and protected her.
Another favorite aspect was, and this might be a minor spoiler but I just have to say it, there weren't only egyptian gods, oh no, there were also... wait for it... GREEK GODS! Greek mythology has been also kind of an obsession with me lately with all the awesome books about it. But yay, Greek gods. Since it's mainly about the egyptian ones, they were more on the background and don't find out about him until way later in the book. But it's perfect! Althought a little, little bit predictable. You'll know what I'm talking about when you read the book.

Outside of this book by favorite god is Set, don't ask me why because I don't even know it, he just is. But unfortunately he wasn't in this book at all except for the information about the mythology we got. So that was kinda a bummer because I was sure he was one of the bad guys with everything bad he did in the past. But oh well, that's just a minor thing to me.
I must say, however, that I wasn't too fond of Isadora herself in the beginning. I didn't like how cold she acted to her parents and they way she treated him. Though, I totally understand why. But, really, it was all one big misunderstanding. If only her mother had talked more about her to why they left Isadora mortal, things would've probably gone a whole different way. But then again, we wouldn't have had this great book if that was the case. Another slightly minor point to me was how I was a little confused in the beginning as to why two gods like Isis and Osiris would have kids that are mortal. Now I know how it all works but at the time I was not sure about it all.
Also wasn't too fond about Isadora's mother, Isis. But I did feel how much she did love her. Her father, Osiris, god of the underworld, was sort of an enigma to me but I'm sure he can raise hell (Ha. See what I did there?) if his family is threatened. And that's those are the only reasons why I didn't rate it a full 5 star read. It was a really good book but not quite that 5 star amazingness I would've liked to feel but it's still a favorite of mine now anyway.
Even though I didn't particulary liked Isadora, I warmed up to her when I read more. She's actually pretty freaking hilarious. Ex: she calls her brother Horus, Whore-us. I kept cracking up when she called him that. But I liked her the best when she was with Ry.

"I open my eyes to see Ry staring at me, and my desert soul erupts with turquoise water, floods and cascades and waterfalls rushing in around my rocky parts, pushing and reshaping and filling every hidden dark spot."

They were adorable together and I love how Isadora could be her own person with him. And I could totally see how much he cares for her. *fangirling again*
Their romance was so sweet and cute. How love how there wasn't any instant-love, however there was instant attraction to each other. That was such a relief to me because I was so afraid that I would have to deal with insta-love yet again. Luckily it wasn't so. They were friends first and although Ry has his own secrets they were good together. Their relationship really grew slowly and I love how Ry let Isadora see that love isn't all about hurting in the end. When she finds out about this secret things about Ry, my heart broke for them because she was so hurt and mad. It was so sad. But anyway it turned out fine in the end, especially when things start to really go bad and a bad person is after Isadora. Ry never stopped trying to protect or love her.
I gotta say this about the bad guys. They were great. And trust me, you'll be surprised to find out who the true baddie is actually. It sure took me by surprise. You think you know the way how a book is going to go, but then it goes entirely the other way. Gotta love that when it happens!

One of the best things about this book, after all the egyptian mythology goodness, was Kiersten White's graceful writing. I adored it. It was really beautiful at times!

“My heart is sand and Orion's cruel tide has washed it away from me, scattered it, lost it.”

I mean, seriously, there are some really enticing sentences that are so alluring I want to paint them on my bedroom walls, I am not kidding. So I'm definitely looking forward to read more books by this author. And I'm also hoping that The Chaos of Stars will get a sequel since in my opinion the end was open to suggestion a bit and I don't like that. I want to know more about all the gods (both egyptian and greek!) and especially see more of Isadora and Ry. So, please, Ms. White, write a sequel! =D

Overal, The Chaos of Stars is a captivating read about egyptian gods but also about love, family and friendship and not taking the easy way out, that everyone just has to read. Kiersten White has created such a perfect world, giving egyptian mythology an exciting spin but also presents interesting information about the mythology which her main character also gives a funny spin on in turn. The writing was perfectly done, enchanting even at time so I couldn't get enough of this story and hope everyone will enjoy it as much as I did.

Oh, shut up. He is not saying that he's too good-looking to be friends with girls. But then again, yesterday at the beach, there were a high percentage of beach beauties sitting very close to us and/or sauntering repeatedly past. And he never looked up once. I snort. "You poor handsome thing. If only you were ugly, then girls wouldn't have to throw themselves at you all the time. I could break your perfect nose for you, if it'd make your life easier.”
There's a reason cats were near deity in ancient Egypt. Dogs may be loyal, but cats are smart. This one must recognize our bond. You can take the cat ouf of Egypt, but you can't take Egypt out of the cat. Wow, I should have that embroidered on a pillow or something.
“I get that you're scared and that you've been hurt. But doing what is easy and safe is no way to live, and a life without passion and love is so far beneath what you deserve.”
“I'm fine." It's a lie. I am not fine. My head is a symphony of pain, a sadistic master maestro conducting an opus of excruciating, devastating perfecting.”
