Arthur had grown accustomed to falling asleep to the sound of her voice, to their endless questions, to the easy companionship that existed only in the darkness of his room.

A marriage of convenience. A scarred duke. And a young woman who was never supposed to capture his heart.

Arthur Wellington, the formidable Duke of Buckingham, has survived war, scandal and a lifetime of expectations. In need of an heir and with little interest in love, he proposes a simple bargain: marriage in exchange for the money that will secure the future of the orphanage Eliza Harper calls home.

For nineteen-year-old Eliza, the choice should be equally simple. Twenty thousand pounds could change countless lives, and all she must do in return is become the wife of one of England’s most feared noblemen.

Neither expects their carefully negotiated arrangement to become something dangerously real.

But as war calls Arthur away and secrets from both their pasts begin to surface, their unlikely marriage is tested by the rigid expectations of Regency society. Eliza must discover where she belongs in a world that was never meant to welcome her, while Arthur must confront a truth far more terrifying than anything he faced on the battlefield: He may have finally found something he cannot bear to lose.

The Duke’s Bargain is a sweeping Regency romance about an arranged marriage that becomes anything but convenient, and two people discovering that sometimes the greatest bargains demand the heart in return.

Can't-Wait Wednesday: Mother of Night by James Bennett

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and talk about the books we're excited about that we have yet to read.
___

Mother of Night: A Medieval Horror Novel by James Bennett
Expected publication: March 23, 2027 by Evil Twin

After being stranded in the remote Alps of Europe, a shipwrecked crew of knights are stalked by both human and monstrous threats in this medieval horror that’s perfect for fans of The Terror and Between Two Fires.

There are strange things in the mountains, my lord. Things older and darker than our Christian God. And hungrier.

1192 AD: Jean is a teller of tales meant to bring sense to a world emerging from the darkest of ages steeped in religious conflict. His weary companions are survivors of both miracles and massacres, weighed down by the secrets of their past, and desperate to return to England. When they are shipwrecked on unforgiving shores, the group begins the dangerous trek home and are hunted; both by vengeful men, and something primal and deadly—something not meant to walk in this world.

As the band of men fall victim one by one, Jean wrestles with suspicion of an unknown threat. His love for his master has already survived a journey of many years and miles; now it will see them both through the dangers ahead. For if they do not make it home a legendary king will fall, a priceless relic will be destroyed, and Jean will lose the person who holds his heart in his keeping. And for his master, Jean would walk into hell itself.

Soon, in the cold and dizzying heights of an isolated mountain road, these mortal men will discover that heroes are merely human, and monsters are very real.

This just sounds SO good! Medieval horror, stranded in the Alps and this sentence of the description is excellent: "There are strange things in the mountains, my lord. Things older and darker than our Christian God. And hungrier."

Yorkshire, 1881. Imogene York has one job: authenticate a dead man’s signature and witness the reading of his will. It should take an afternoon.

But the moment she arrives at Trelawney Grange, she can tell the people gathered to hear Lord Alaric Trelawney’s final wishes aren’t waiting on an inheritance. They’re waiting on something they’ve spent fifteen years hoping would stay buried.

Every person in that house-the doctor, the solicitor, the reverend, the aristocrat, the household staff who move through it like they were never there at all-is bound together by a secret from one terrible summer years before, and no one will say what it is. As the snow closes in and the will’s true purpose comes to light, Imogene realizes she wasn’t hired to verify a signature. She was hired to witness a reckoning fifteen years in the making, and there is no walking away from the past.

A gripping Victorian mystery about the debts the past never stops collecting, and the lengths people will go to keep a secret buried or to finally bring it to light.

EXCERPT:

1866
London England
Prologue

He shivered as a draft moved through the room. He sorted through documents spread out before him, organizing them into careful piles. He thought about the conversation that had occurred and anger exploded inside his head. The upstart!

What did he know about anything? He, who had studied with Dr. John Snow, so renowned in his field. His throat was dry. He pulled the decanter of whiskey toward him and poured. The amber liquid splashed on a piece of paper but he brushed at it dismissively.

He drank it quickly and it seared his throat but he poured himself another. He contemplated the glass this time before drinking. He should have known. Those do-gooder types didn’t understand the true sacrifice he was making. They couldn’t see the big picture. They couldn’t see what was really happening. What he was trying to do. He set the glass back down without taking a sip and saw that his hand was shaking. Blast it! It had all been going so well. Why couldn’t they leave him alone? Now what.

He looked about the room. The draft no longer bothered him and he felt a sweat break out on his brow. There was much to do. But most importantly, he must find his medical notes. They had been right here on his desk. He was certain. It was a necessity. No one would have come into his room and removed them, had they? No. They wouldn’t dare.

He pondered it. Perhaps his assistant, the new fellow fresh from school, had simply moved them. No. He wouldn’t. He had expressly told him not to meddle with his things. He didn’t like it and he had everything just as he liked it. So where were they, dammit!

A knock sounded at the door and almost caused him to jump. The hour was late. Who could it be?

“It’s me,” the familiar male voice called out.

His benefactor. The one with all the purse strings. He must play the part at least for him.

“Just a moment,” he called back.

He looked at his reflection in the window and saw that his hair was disheveled. He took out a comb and quickly brushed his wavy hair in place. The desk was in disarray and he quickly placed the papers in neat stacks to show the appearance of order.

Jesus, what awful timing. He called the man to enter and the visitor did, looking about the room.

“Am I interrupting you?” the older man asked.

“Certainly not,” he replied. “I was looking for some misplaced medical notes. That blasted assistant must have moved them. I told him not to meddle.”

The older man settled himself into the red leather chair. “I wanted to speak with you privately. It’s important.” He swallowed visibly and appeared to be trying to find the words.

“The hour is quite late.”

“It is. You’ll forgive me.” The older man nodded. “I would have waited but—” He almost stumbled over his words.

“It must be something of great importance to bring you here at this late hour,” he noted.

His benefactor seemed to take in the words and almost seemed dazed. “Yes,” he said in agreement. “Something most concerning has reached my ears, most concerning,” he repeated for emphasis.

The man had no time for this. What’s more, he didn’t want to hear anything he had to say. It was irritating that in all of his important work, he had to give the man anything. For Christ’s sake! Didn’t this feather-head realize what was at stake? But he steeled himself and responded as he should.

“What is this concern?”

But instead of answering outright, his benefactor merely looked about the room. “I scarcely know where to begin.”

In a flash of blinding anger, he resisted the urge to stand up and reach over the table to slap the man’s face. Who did he think he was? How dare he presume anything? The man might have status and money but little else. Just because he had been born into the right family, what else did he have? Brains? Certainly not. If he had been born a common person, he would be selling fish at the docks.

But he calmed himself. He knew who he was. He was the one with brilliance and brains, decidedly so. He was the one who had risen and become the man he was today. He was the shining star. But he needed the older man’s patronage. He knew that. He would have to play the game, then, and pretend to care about whatever was preying on the man’s mind.

If the man told him something stupid like they had not enough places set at the dinner table or the china was mismatched, he might strangle him.

Instead, his expression stayed mild, untroubled. “Tell me the concern. Perhaps together we can alleviate the issue.”

Relief eased across his benefactor’s face. “Yes. This must be a mistake. It can’t be what I’ve been told. I heard something from my sister, but she can ramble. But then the vicar came to me—”

“Oh yes?”

“And the family solicitor—”

“Him as well? My, my,” he said, trying to pretend to care. “What is it they are saying? Tell me quick.”

He only hoped he would tell the story quickly so he could be on his way.

Then without preamble, his benefactor began to speak. He laid out the whole issue, the concerns, the rumors and the whispers that were being spoken about and how grave the matter was. He mentioned his sister’s concerns and a young man who had spoken to the solicitor’s son and on and on the man babbled. He thought if the man was a tenor opera singer, his aria would last thirty minutes. It was exhausting and supremely irritating.

“It’s fantastic – is it not?” His benefactor said. “Most fantastic. I can hardly fathom it myself. I told Delly she was ridiculous. She should know better than to pass on rumors.”

“That is – quite a story,” he agreed as he pulled the decanter to him once more. “Quite a story.”

He poured the man a drink and pushed it across the desk to him. He took up his glass from earlier and took a long sip. “What proof is there of these allegations?”

His benefactor’s shoulders dropped. “That’s just it. Some rumors and whispers. But as it’s reached my ears, as your benefactor, we must discuss it.”

“My, my.” He set his glass down. “And what are you prepared to do?”

“Get to the bottom of it!” His patron said passionately. “Good God, man! These are lies, slander! I’ll not have you slandered! You could sue in court. I’ll be your witness,” the older man’s face grew red with exertion.

“Very decent of you,” he murmured. He swirled the amber liquid in the glass absently. “Very decent of you indeed.”

“Of course, my dear chap,” the older man looked relieved. “Least I could do.”

The mantel clock chimed the half hour.

“That’s of course assuming these rumors are false,” he said quietly, taking another sip. “What if they are true?”

His benefactor looked slightly irritated. “This is no time for jests, old boy,” the older man said curtly. “The rumors are grave. I might even say macabre.”

“Macabre?” he echoed.

“Yes!”

But he just continued to stare at his patron while swirling the liquor in the glass.

“Wait. What are you – what are you saying?” His benefactor suddenly straightened up in his chair. “In plain English. Gentleman to gentleman. I demand you tell me what is happening.”

“Your witnesses speak the truth.”

The silence between the two men was deafening.

“No. No, that can’t be.” His patron grew pale.

“I assure you, it is,” he said, his mouth curving.

His benefactor suddenly looked sick in the low gas lights. “No. I- I don’t believe it,” he whispered.

“Well, you certainly don’t need to believe it.”

“But if the witnesses are correct, and the rumors are true,” he visibly swallowed, “you’re a—” He shook his head.

“Yes? Go on.” He was amused at the turn of conversation. The man was an idiot.

“You’re a monster.”

He sat back in his chair and surveyed his patron. “Come now. There’s no need for dramatics.”

But his benefactor stood up then. He looked flushed now.

“I demand you refute these rumors laid at your door! I demand it!”

Calmly without saying a word, he pulled a cigarette from his silver case and lit it. He took a long drag before responding. “The rumors are not rumors,” he said steadily. “Your witnesses are correct.”

The man’s face drained of color.

“I’m leaving tonight,” he told him. “There need not be any fuss or theatrics. I will leave quietly and continue my work in India. The matter will end and you will squash the rumors.”

“The hell I will!” His face was now mottled with anger. “The hell I will!”

He took another sip of whiskey completely unbothered by the man’s outburst.

“If these things are true, you should be imprisoned! Hanged even!”

“No, sir. I won’t be.”

“Why won’t you be?” The patron demanded.

“For the simple reason that you helped me. Your family helped me, your vicar helped me. You are complicit. Whether you like it or not,” he told him.

“No,” he whispered and fell into the chair. “I’m not. That’s not what I did. I thought – I thought you were helping. I thought you were a savior. We all thought that.”

“Hmph! Did you really? Or did you also want to be involved with the discovery of a lifetime?” he said coolly. “Perhaps you wanted to even take a bit of credit as my benefactor.”

His benefactor sputtered out several words but nothing made sense until he finally whispered, “How dare you?”

He poured himself another glass enjoying himself and the interaction. “So. As I said. I will leave quietly. You will let everyone know that I was called to India of the utmost importance, and nothing else will be said.”

“You can’t get away with this,” he said weakly. “You can’t.”

“My dear chap,” he said, his face showing no emotion. “I already have.”

Review: A Thief Among Fae by Maddy Calder

Title: A Thief Among Fae
Author: Maddy Calder
Series: Of Thieves & Tombs #1
Publication: September 16, 2026
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Find it on: Amazon US | Amazon CA | Amazon UK | Amazon DE | Amazon BE | Amazon AU
Rating: 4/5★

She’s the key to the cursed tomb that can save his people. He’s the prince who promises her the ultimate treasure—but only if she binds her soul to his own.

Cynthia's magic is only good for one thing: raiding deadly tombs.

Desperate to buy a better future for her ailing sister, Cynthia enters a soul-binding bargain with a frustratingly handsome fae prince. Her task? Help him break into a king’s cursed tomb for the heist of a lifetime.

But allying with Desmond puts Cynthia in the crosshairs of his blood-soaked past. He’s scorned by his own kingdom, hunted by assassins, and infuriatingly sarcastic. Cynthia despises him—except he sees potential in her magic that she’s never dared to see in herself.

What Cynthia doesn’t know is that Desmond is a necromancer, a power forbidden by the gods, and he’ll do anything to free his people. Crossing him will cost her life, but the irresistible pull between them might cost her heart.

A Thief Among Fae is the start of a slow-burn fantasy romance series, packed with sword fights, perilous adventures, and a dash of necromancy. Perfect for fans of Skyrim and daring heroines like Lara Croft.

A Thief Among Fae is Maddy Calder's debut novel and honestly? You'd never guess this was a debut novel because the writing feels like the work of someone who's been writing books for years. It was a really good story with fantastic characters and very well-written. I'm already looking forward to the next book!

The story follows Cynthia a.k.a. Cyn who's been tomb raiding with the help of her magic in hopes of securing her parents and younger sister a better future. When she makes a binding deal with the mysteryious fae prince Desmond, who's also known as the Prince of Death, she joins him and a crew of thieves on a mission to break into a cursed king’s tomb. But as they face deadly dangers and uncover secrets about Desmond’s forbidden necromancy, their growing attraction makes the bargain far more complicated than either expected.

I do have to admit it took me a good 25%-30% to really get into the story. TThe beginning was a little slow, probably because there was quite a bit of world-building needed to properly set the scene. But this was totally worth it once I got to know more acquainted with this fantasy world and the characters in it. I ended up really falling in love with the story. What I loved the most was the adventure of the tomb raiding (I cannot express how fun this was to read about!) and how there was almost non-stop action. This made for a really exciting read!

Also, if you mention necromancy in a fantasy book, I'm so there and I was not left disappointed with it in A Thief Among Fae. On top of that, I really enjoyed the romance. The slow-burn between Cynthia and Desmond had plenty of chemistry and tension, without ever taking over the main plot. The secondary characters were also all a great bunch to read about and each brought something unique to the story that I ended up loving.

A Thief Among Fae by Maddy Calder had everything I look for in a fantasy romance: dangerous adventures, magic, fae, a cursed tomb and a slow-burn romance with plenty of tension. It was a solid debut that left me excited to see where the series goes next.

About the author:

Maddy Calder writes fantasy romances filled with ruthless fae, impossible bargains, dangerous magic, and love worth risking everything for. A lifelong lover of enchanted worlds, Maddy creates stories for readers who believe the best adventures begin with a little danger and end with a happily ever after. When not writing, Maddy can be found playing cozy video games, sewing, or reading with a cup of peppermint tea.

EXCERPT:

Juliet “Jules” Lockwood had sworn exactly six times since leaving the highway and crossing the Blue Spruce Hills town line. All six had been silent. All six had been necessary.

She pulled her Subaru into the gravel lot beside the Blue Spruce Hills Community Clinic and sat there longer than necessary, hands wrapped around the steering wheel like the car might attempt escape without her. Outside, the October sky was an intense blue with a few white clouds scudding across it. A carved pumpkin grinned from the clinic’s front step. Orange lights shaped like leaves were looped around the porch railing. Just up the street, a plastic skeleton swung from a telephone pole, rotating haphazardly in the wind.

Jules stared at the skeleton. The skeleton appeared to stare back.

She opened the car door, stepped out onto the gravel, closed her eyes, and took a deep inhale. Wood smoke and baked goods, harvest-sweet with cinnamon and nutmeg. It was, Jules thought grimly, aggressively charming. She took a step and nearly collided with a man holding a cardboard tray of coffee.

“Oh! Sorry!” he said, immediately steadying both the tray and her elbow with equal care. He was tall and laid back, with dark hair that the wind had done something unrequested to and kind brown eyes, soft and patient, the sort of eyes that suggested the person behind them listened when you talked. He wore a canvas jacket the color of cedar bark and was smiling with the easy confidence of someone who had nowhere to be and was fine with that. “You must be Jules.”

She froze. This was… unfortunate. Because those eyes were going to be a problem. She recognized his type immediately, the way one would recognize a load-bearing wall, structural and quiet, that the whole room organizes itself around without anyone quite noticing. Those eyes reflected the sort of steadiness that belonged to men who stayed. She had believed that about someone once. Believed it comprehensively and inconveniently, and at considerable personal expense. Never again.

“I’m Eli Matthews,” he said, and held out the coffee tray. “Town historian and unofficial town greeter. I brought options. Decaf, regular, and one with oat milk, because the clinic called ahead and…” he paused, reconsidering his own sentence, “okay, I asked Margaret at the post office, who asked Clara at the bakery, who said she had heard that you’d mentioned oat milk to someone at the gas station in Lehighton.”

Jules stared at the tray. “That’s a significant intelligence operation for a cup of coffee.”

He smiled, a little sheepishly. “Small town. We have patterns.” He glanced at the pumpkin on the porch. “Also, it’s October. We take hospitality seriously in October.”

She reached for the oat milk coffee. Behind her, someone cleared their throat very distinctly — the throat-clearing of someone who had been waiting a respectable amount of time and was now done waiting. Jules’s hand tightened around the cup.

She recognized that sound. She knew it the way she knew a change in barometric pressure, in her teeth, at the base of her skull, in the specific cold that moved along her spine when something was present that had no business being present.

Absolutely not. I am not doing ghosts again.

She turned slowly.

Review: The Intimate Afterlife of Myth by Venus Gunyeli

Title: The Intimate Afterlife of Myth: Ancient Stories for the Inner Life
Author: Venus Gunyeli
Publication: August 14, 2026
Genre: Nonfiction, Mythology, Psychology
Find it on: Amazon US | Amazon AU | Amazon CA | Amazon BE
Rating: 4/5★

MYTH IS NOT OVER.

It survives in the choices we repeat, the losses we carry, and the questions that return when certainty gives way.

What if the figures of myth were not distant symbols, but lives we could approach more closely—lives shaped by love and loyalty, power and error, grief and change?

The Intimate Afterlife of Myth revisits ten Greek and Mesopotamian myths, from Persephone and Gilgamesh to Inanna, Psyche, Hector, and Prometheus. Rather than reducing them to simple lessons or fixed interpretations, the book stays with the psychological and emotional questions their stories leave unresolved and with the ways those questions still echo in modern life.

Each chapter brings together:

• Literary myth retellings grounded in ancient sources
• Thoughtful explorations of what each story leaves unresolved
• Imagined voices that draw the mythic figures closer
• Reflective questions and space for personal integration

Read from beginning to end, return to the figure whose story calls to you, or follow one of the thematic paths offered at the close of the book.

Neither a conventional mythology collection nor a prescriptive self-help book, this is an invitation to remain with ancient stories long enough to recognise where they continue and what becomes visible when their questions meet your own.

For readers drawn to Greek and Mesopotamian mythology, psychology, literary reflection, and ancient stories that still speak to modern life.

"A path does not have to be visible before movement begins. For now, one direction is enough."

The Intimate Afterlife of Myth offers a thoughtful, intimate look at myths that have survived for thousands of years, from Mesopotamian to Greek myths. I love it when mythology feels less like something from the distant past and more like something we can still see ourselves in. And this book shows exactly just how timeless these stories and the questions they raise can be.

I really liked how each chapter began with a short retelling of a myth rooted in ancient sources, then explored the unanswered questions surrounding it, delved into what the character themselves may have thought, and ended with some thoughtful self-reflection. I enjoyed this unique format and how the book falls somewhere between an exploration of mythology and personal reflection, both of which really spoke to me.

Overall, The Intimate Afterlife of Myth: Ancient Stories for the Inner Life by Venus Gunyeli was an insightful and nuanced examination of mythology that gave me a new way of looking at these ancient stories.

About the author:

Venus Gunyeli is an Istanbul-born writer interested in what stories, traditions, and forms of knowledge become as they pass from one life and one era into another.

Her interest in ancient cultures began in childhood and has remained a quiet constant in the way she reads and understands the world. Her work turns to ancient texts, inherited practices, and cultural memory without treating the past as a storehouse of ready-made answers. She is drawn instead to what survives change: the questions a story continues to hold, the knowledge carried through ordinary acts, and the meanings that shift when old forms enter new lives.

Across her books, this has led her from the healing traditions and everyday knowledge of Anatolia to contemplative practice inspired by Rumi, and most recently to the unresolved human questions held within Greek and Mesopotamian myth.

Years spent working within holistic wellness and exploring movement disciplines deepened her attention to the ways inner life, the body, and everyday experience continually shape one another. Art and music have long been part of how she notices image, rhythm, atmosphere, and form.

She lives near the Aegean coast and writes about what we inherit, what we alter, and what remains.

You are not broken. You are not behind. Your peace and power have been inside you all along.

It's time to chill out, cheer up, and come home to yourself.

I first read Chill Out and Cheer Up five years ago in 2021 (seriously, where does the time go?!), but when I learned that Grace Grossmann had released a revised edition, I knew I had to read it again. And I'm so happy to say that I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I even bought myself a physical copy so I could highlight with some bright colors and annotate the book a little. I had so much fun with this that I ended up reading it in one single sitting!

I feel like taking care of yourself whether it's mentally or physically has become even more important in 2026. I know I've been working even more on it. Life can be hard in so many ways, which is why I think we need books just like this one.

One of the things I appreciated most about this revised edition is how open and honest the author is. She didn't shy away from letting her readers know that even she goes through hard times, as we all do. It only shows that we're all just human, that no one has everything figured out all the time, nor do we need to. I also loved how she added comments in italics as a reflection on what she wrote five years ago. These were really great to read!

I enjoyed rereading all the tips and tricks that I found helpful the first time around. Some of them I still practice to this day, while others I’d like to start implementing again like more positive thinking, connection with nature and maybe a little less scrolling on my phone.

Once again, I found Chill Out and Cheer Up: A Ten-Step Guide by Grace Grossmann inspiring and incredibly helpful. I just know that other readers won't regret picking it up and will get just as much out of it as I did.
